Subject: Swapping Gears on 06

Message:
I just purchased an 06 quad cab 4X2 SLT with 4.7L V8 with 3.55 rear gears. If I swap to 3.91 or 4.10 gears, will this mess the computer up, or just the speedometer reading? The service guy at the dealership didn't impress me with his knowledge. Thanks, Don.

Generally speaking, lower gears means worse milage, and lower top speed. It used to be more of a highway concern before overdrive transmissions, now we can get a better compromise between gearing for power or highway. Several of us have actually seen better milage going from 3.55 to 4.10 with the 4.7; it could be that this motor is more efficient at higher revs than many old design motors. I haven't seen that claim from those with 4.56 ratio, but they haven't complained of a big drop in milage either.

No complaints. My mileage has suffered around town and off-road as that's where I "use" these gears, if you know what I mean. Highway has stayed the same as my 3:55's because I'm usually in 5th with cruise on driving pretty mellow.
