Anyone tried the frozen rotors?
http://www.frozenrotors.com

I'm just about fed up with my Dakota front discs... I've just roasted another $300 worth of Hawk pads and Powerslot rotors after 2 months.

Bloody dodge engineers! When will they get it right? Oh, yeah, never I guess... They probably love it when we have to replace our brakes twice yearly.

I just replaced my pads after 70,000 miles. Rotors measured ok but I'll be replacing them shortly. I don't see how premature wear is the problem of "bloody dodge engineers."

Ya im not sure what it going on with your truck but i just replaced my pads at 88000 and i have 118000 on them now and they arent even half way down. The way it sounds to me its either you drive everywhere with the gas and brake on at the same time, always drive 100 mph and brake as hard as you can or pulling a 10000 lb trailer all day.

Here is my advice go to autozone and get some of there Duralast rotors (2 year warrenty) and a set of there best (long lasting not hard core grab) semi metalic pads. And if you go through them in 6 months take them back and get a set of new ones for free.

Admittedly, I do brake quite hard...

However, inadequate rotor sizing is a chronic problem in today's auto industry. Dodge Dakotas are NOTORIOUS for this. I don't know how many threads I've seen on this forum about warped brake rotors... I have no problems with pads. It's just these teeny weeny rotors are totally inadequate.

I have not paid much attention to the rear's (bought the truck new 5 years ago). That could be a contributing factor. And my 33" mudders don't help either.

Time for a solid axle swap I think... Get rid of the whole drivetrain altogether.

So no-one uses frozen rotors then?

No; I have never used the cryogenically treated rotors, so I can't give any honest advice on them.

However; last time I replaced them (with the Duralast, by the way) I removed the splash shields that bolt to the spindle and surround the backside of the rotor. This is free and allows for much better rotor cooling (short of fabbing some air ducts)! Hence, no more rotor warpage!

AFAIK, this change has no negative effects...

Extreme Velocity Intake, 52 MM Holley Billet, Ported, Hughes Plenum Plate, Perma Cool Fan, Jacobs Pro Street, Moroso Ultra 40, Bosch 4, Superchips, TPS, CPS, IAT Mods, Dynomax Ultra Flo, Transgo, SLT Trim, Diamond Heads & Corners, Clear Tails, Hood Pins, APC White Gauge, PML Polished Trans & Diff Covers...

Yes, I have used them since around 21K miles when the stock brakes were beyond use they were so badly warped. They have lasted with the EBC pads that I have put on till now around 53K miles. I think I need new pads, but the rotors are holding up and not warped yet.

Another set of pads and rotors? You have a definate problem, and it's clearly not a problem with the Dodge parts that you've been replacing with aftermarket. I don't see why you continue to blame the dodge parts, when you're not using them any more.

As I see it, you have two choices. #1, you can do some investigation and find out what the real problem is. Are the calipers not releasing? Rear shoes not adjusted? Driving with two feet? Put the tools down and use your head.

#2, you can keep replacing pads and rotors every 2-3 months. I suggest you buy the cheapest ones you can find.

DakHunter, Dodge didn't design the brakes for you, they designed them for the other 99.9999%. The after market targets that small group of people that have needs beyond what the factory delivers.

It's a simple matter of too small a rotor for the weight of the vehicle... I think my Grammas Sprint has about the same size brakes on it.

You don't hear about these brake troubles on Gen 1 & 2... It's just another example of cheapening the truck - much like the ball joint issue.

I agree with Dakhunter 100%, the Dakotas brakes absolutely suck. Both my father and I have (well he just traded his in last week)2001 4x4 Dakotas... he had 60k and was on his 4th rotor set, I have 113k and on my 3rd set.

I have been tempted to buy frozenrotors but the cost was hard to swallow since I hadn't had feedback from someone who has used them.

The stock Dodge pads should last for quite some time "I had 80,000 miles on mine with 1/2 the pad material still left", but the rotors do have issues with warping no matter if the rear brakes are adjusted correctly or not... They're just made out of cheaper steel like anything else anymore...

I recommend going to autozone and buying the cross drilled and slotted rotors that they offer... They weigh about twice or atleast half again as much as the stock rotors and they're heat treated or rather they are made out of tempered steel... I put a set of them on my dakota and have never had anymore troubles out of them... I also recommend going back to dodge for their brake pads... The rotors are about $85 apiece...

110K miles, original rotors (rear are drums) and on my 2nd set of pads/shoes. No warpage. I also have a standard tranny, so I can use the tranny to down shift.

If it doesn't fit, you're using the wrong hammer!

Question is, where do you drive and what kind of road conditions? My truck sees the 2nd worst traffic in the country... Phoenix, and my daily commute is 100 miles RT. Of course not to mention the fact that the road surface during the summer is probably 150+ degrees!

I bought NAPA's best rotor at 20,000. My factory pads looked new yet so I never changed them. I'm pushing 70,000 now and The pads are still more then 1/2 there. I'm sure i'll be well over 100,000 before I need pads. I consider myself a normal driver. I am the kind of driver that can not see reasoning in racing to the next light. It just distroys gas milage and brakes both.I also can not comprehend brakes being wore out on 50 or 60 thousand miles let alone 20,000. Every auto I have ever owned went over 100,000 on original brakes. Myself, I see no problem with the Dakota brakes. Not even with my camper loaded on it going to the coast. The camper is 1185 pounds empty and dry.I would be afraid of killing someone or myself waring brakes out in 20,000. WOW

So many problems .... So little time
