Message: My Dak currently has 3.55s with the LSD. I want to swap in 4.56s. I found a set on ebaymotors for around 300 including shipping, but I don't think I have the experience to install them myself.
Can someone tell me if the installation process is complicated or not? I hear labor is a lot (can someone specify that the labor?) and I don't want to spend a ton of money on installation.

Message: Spend the money and let the pros do it. One wrong thing, and you're screwed. Here in SoCal, install labor is between $250-$400 if you supply the necessary parts.

Message: Whoa, that's nothing. I dunno why the hell someone was telling me between $1000-$2000 for labor alone. I plan on buying the parts myself for cheap. I live in NorCal by the way.

Message: ScojoDak is right. You should be able to get a set installed for 300ish per axle. That $1000+ is most likely the installed price in a 4x4 including parts.

Message: 4.56's? I hope you have an auto tranny.
I picked up my 3.92's, for my 9.25, LSD,
off e-bay, came out of an R/T, for $50 shipped.
Had then installed for about $300ish.
Manual tranny though.

Message: "WHY?" Here's my thinking...
Unless you're running really tall tires 1st gear would be pretty much unnecessary, or useless. Imagine redlining it and only going 20MPH. :-)

Message: Or imagine a situation where you want mad torque and pulling power to the rear wheels, off roading or towing, aren't we talking TRUCKS here?

Message: I'm sorry, useless was a bad word choice. "Not very usefull in most circumstances" would have been far better.
I understand these are trucks and we use them for truck things. Yes, towing and 4x4ing up those monster hills do apply. 4-low would yield a 49.8:1 overall ratio using 4.56s with the NV3500 - wow! Talk about hitting the rev limiter!
For most driving chores I would imagine my truck would rarely see 1st gear if I had that rear end gearing. Sometimes when towing I have "forgotten" to use 1st gear (I hardly use it in normal driving) and started off in 2nd as my "normal".
I run P255/70R16s (29" tall on the truck, 30" calculated) and I run out of 1st gear real fast when I use it. I could only imagine what that would be like with 4.56s.
