Message: No. You do not need a flash.
Any time you modify your engine's intake or exhaust to a major degree, it is often best to reset the PCU. This zero's the adaptives, and the computer relearns everything based on the changes in engine operation brought about by the new equipment.

Message: Good guess; and right on the money as far as it goes. A flash changes values in the PCM. There are flashes from the dealer to correct problems; and then there are custom flashes. Many are wary of the dealer flashes as some retard timing - this is what is being referred to if you hear the slang term "death flash". Many of us have found the 4.7 responds well to extra ignition advance; most 4.7's will tolerate this because of the aluminum heads. So while you don't "need" a custom flash, you may want one. The flash I got felt like as much of a gain as swapping in the HO cams. As far as I know though, there isn't one available for the newer 4.7 Daks yet.

Message: The Autozone tool only resets fault codes. You want to reset the PCU.
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Turn ignition switch to START, just like you were trying to start the engine, and hold for about 10-15 seconds with your foot on the brake pedal. This sucks all the juice out of everything and causes your PCU to reset.
Then reconnect the battery cable.
The first time you start the engine after doing this, let it idle for a couple minutes before you hit the road.

Message: The 4.7L V8 PCM is considerably more efficient from the factory than the 5.2L/5.9L V8 counterparts, you probably don't need a PCM flash with only basic bolt-ons, although once you start getting into the HO Manifold or HO Cams you may want to look into a reflash.
Contact Dave Kaspar at www.bgchrysler.com for more info about PCM flashes.
