Message: If you plan on camming the 318 to a higher lift cam, you probably will need to go kinda (all out) because without high-flow intake manifold, Heads, Exhaust Manifolds and of course throttle body, you really arent going to get 100% benefit from a cam.

Message: Since the heads, intake, etc are all the same size as the 360 Magnum, and the 318 valves are actually, ever-so-slightly larger than the 360's, a higher performance cam will not go to waste on the 318 which is othwerwise un-modified. Just be sure to not get too wild, so the computer stays happy. Caomp Cams offers what they call a stock replacement cam, which they said means, other than better valvesprings, no mods are required. It remains a smooth engine, but with considerably better upper rpm power (not huge, remember, this is a cam requiring no computer mods). Duration is only a few degrees more than stock, but lift is .480", up from the stock .432".
That particular cam is the 254HR-12.
They have hotter models, but you will need PCM mods to use them.

Message: I also have a 97 4x4 with the 318. I used the KRC 210X cam, and I really like it. I need to get a custom PCM calibration to really finish it off right. It sounds good, and runs like hell from 2500-6000. If you use a cam like that one, you'll need a better torque converter for sure.
M1, CAI, Flowmaster 40 true duals, no cats KRC 210x cam, headers, Mopar PCM, R/T heads, MSaine 2800 stall converter
