Message: There is virtually no performance gain from removing a catcon. It is, however, a federal crime, a felony punishable by $2,500 fine. It also means if you ever sell the vehicle and the next owner finds it (hiimself, or if it goes for inspection wherever he lives), you can be held responsible for paying the cost to restore it.
Most new vehicles also have an upstream and downstream O2 sensor, to check functionality of the catcon. If it's installed and working properly, the downstream sensor will measure a leaner exhaust gas. Without the catcon, the upstream and downstream sensors will read the same, and you will get a check engine light and fault code.
Most catcons these days are already high-flow, so just leave it alone.

Message: removed my cat and felt no gains... But the muffler shop put smaller piping on... dumb asses... that still pisses me off why would you put 2 1/2 on a truck that came stock with 3" pipe...
And yes, I noticed a lot more smoking!

Message: like people said not enough of a gain to make it worth removing. if its a 98 or old there is only one o2 sensor so no need to worry.

Message: To the guy beating 5.9L's all day long. Think you forgot to mention there in full size trucks > that being the case I also can do this or at least one . Only tried my best friend and I out run him. Removing your cat does only one small thing. Changes the exhaust sound a bit. Before you deside your going to beleive the guys saying big HP gains or even small ones LOOK THROUGH A CAT. Then try to explain how you go faster with or without. To be legal, True duels require a cat on both sides...o2's and hardwired. Your money. You do the math

Message: Multiple things here:
JasonB61: All dakotas came with 2.5" stock.
Toolfan: thanks for the info that 98 and older only have one o2. I was under my truck and couldn't find the upstream one, which confused me.
Obio3: 5.2/5-speed have no problem beating stock R/T's, and the 4.7/5-speed is about equal if they can't also beat the R/T's.
to the original poster, I say just get a high-flow cat and be done with it. Unless you live in a state with no inspections, like florida, you run the risk of being caught, and these days, those environmentalists will take everything from you.

Message: Are you positive all dakota's came stock with 2.5"? I HAD 3 on mine and I thought I remembered reading somewhere that 92 was the first year the dakota got 3" or maybe it was something to do with the manifold.. but either way, when I got my truck it had 3" and now I dont :-(

Message: My 03 came with three cats. Now it has two. There are no sensors on the third main cat. I did notice more hp in the upper rpm's above 4K. The mpg went up also. Just got a sticker here in MA with no problems. All they do now is plug into the diagnostic port for emissions.

Message: My 93 3.9 also came with 3" exaust. I dont understand why removing the cat would cause more smoke unless the engine management system is causing it to run rich, someone please explain, thanx.

Message: ya, I dont know if its a related issue (or just a bad motor) but when I get on the gas hard, It leaves black smoke.. also caused black smoke to stain my chrome bumper.. you'd be better leaving your converter on.... I didnt notice a gain (but if there was a gain, it would have been canceled out by the smaller piping that replaced it)... When I ran for about a week with NO exhaust, I noticed a gain lol but it seemed to have lost a lot of top end with no exhaust...

Message: Jason ..... Your engine is recieving a rich mixture. Do a scan . with luck you will pick up a code. If not then I suspect you have a component that is working borderline to stop a code from showing up. in that case check your o2 for proper voltage. Hopefilly you have a factory repair manual. These are great and your best friend in these situations. Reguardless you will need accurate information to figure it out. No doubt, you fix this and fuel milage is going to increase.
