Message: That's a mistake. The 318 became a Magnum for the 1992 year, the 360 became a Magnum for the 1993 year, so that particular table should read 1990-1991, not 1992. I'll have to drop them a note about that.

Message: The difference is more marketing than massive change. The Magnum heads are an evolutionary outgrowth of the last of the LA heads. All Magnum heads have the same size ports as the 360LA. The 360 Magnum retains the same size valves as the 360LA. The closed chamber design started with the 1985 318LA "fast-burn" head. The Magnum heads took the last of the LA heads a step further by lowering the port floors and eliminating the exhaust "dogleg" to further improve flow characteristics. These improvements allow the Magnum head to flow as well as the old 340LA "X" head with 2.02" intake valves. The 360 Mag has 1.88" intake valves. Also, since the Magnum head has a much improved exhaust flow, the overall flow balance between intake and exhaust is better than on the LA, making it easier to make power. Most of what was done to create the Magnum head is what racers have been doing for decades to the LA heads in the form of hand-porting to address the flow issues. Aside from that, Mopar changed the way the heads and intake bolt together. They got rid of the excellent shaft-mounted rocker system, and replaced it with an AMC-style. The block is slightly different, but can be used easily as a replacement for the LA block. Finally, it was Mopar's way of heralding the move to multi-point fuel injection (better late than never).
