Subject: 46re no power IP: Logged
Message: my 99 dakota rt has a 46re in it. I lost all power and sent it to a trans shop, where they were looking for the problem. Come to find out my cpu had went south and the truck was in safe mode. It failed because a short in the distibutor. I got it replaced and now the everything works right except the trans. There is a code, (check engine trans solenoid) or something like that. I don't think the trans is getting any power at all. I don't know where to check the connections, and I'm not taking it back to that trans shop. The truck is drivable, somewhat. From park it will got into 1st if i select it, then 2nd when i manual shift it to 3rd. but it won't downshift back to 1st unless i put it in park, first. overdrive won't engage at all. reverse is fine. Any help would be appreciated. thanks

Message: I thought I'd bumped it into neutral, at warp speed on the 101 freeway. I coasted off to the side. Nothing. Turned it off, and on, and tried again. Went into gear so I put the breaks on hard and floored it. Bogged down, showing it was in gear.
Went straight to my trans guy who kept it. The solenoids are a package of electronics and replaced that way. He adjusted the bands, added a new batch of AMSOIL ATF-4 and away we went. Now we have 500,000 miles on that transmission. If you don't assassinate it, yours should last.
Clay, fix it so you aren't stranded.
