I know there's alot of people who have made this swap, but, they always seem to be auto trannys. I am looking for another dak running these gears with a manual tranny, lifted/ lowered I don't care

automatics like low gears like that cause our dakota first gears are only about 2.80 to 1. the manual first gear is 4.00 to 1 or about that.

so do you really need a gear that low when you already have such a good starter gear. might end up just a pain in the butt and taking off in second gear half the time.

your call though. i have an automatic and i just ordered 4.10s five minutes ago off ebay. join the 4.10 club if you want gears in your manual.
my two cents.

2004 dakota 4.7 extended cab
exhaust
ho cams
remote start, tinted windows
3.55, soon to be 4.10 gears

My guess is unless you've got really big tires you don't even use 1st gear on the street. I have 29" tall tires and I only use 1st for starts when not on level ground. Of course, when towing or heavily loaded I use it. Or when I want that quick jump out of the hole!

Yup, what I figured. I have 4.56's on an auto and I know it's 1st gear is like 3.00 : 1 and my 3rd gear is a straight through 1:1 so only two underdrive ratios.
The MANUAL 5 speed 1st gear is way lower and your 4th is a 1:1, so you have 3 under drive ratios. I'd do 3.92's or 4.10's

Graph,

That's exactly why I finally went to 3.92's, with my manual and the stock 16in. wheels.

It's Nice.

It added 300rpm (from 2100-2400) in 5th @ 70mph.

And I thought it had some balls before. Now it stays in the power band much nicer, without the little lag when you get to third.

Unless you have some TALL tires, 4.56's and a manual nv3500 would be as waste.

As I said before, I have to go to 5100, to hit 25mph in 1st as it is now with my stock 16's and the 3.92's.

graphitedak said it right. but join the 4.10 club. it'll give you something to brag about instead of 3.92 which alot of dodge have anyway.
i know that was a very immature statement but i'll bet alot of us after a race talking to the guy we just beat would like to have something like that to brag about.

You know I bought a NV3500 for my Duster project. It looks like I can make it work fairly easy.

When I tell people that I got a manual from a Dakota their first impression is something like "A truck tranny? You'r first gear will be useless, blah blah blah!"

I reply something like "Dumb Sh*T! It's not like an old top loading TRUCK tranny with a GRANNY GEAR! Dakota's have manuals with gears and that shift more like a sports car, not like the old truck tranny's with granny gears and a 20" throw shifting from gear to gear! LOL!!!

In fact. With the extension removed on the NV3500 I noticed it's got something like a short 3 inch throw from 1st to 2nd, etc...

I need to bolt that pig to the engine and lay it in there to get measurements damn it!

Maybe this weekend if I get time.

456's and a manual,

IF you have tall tires, then it's about the same!

It's funny to read all these comments from folks who have not paid attention to ID4x4's sig line - he already has 4.56 gears. And he did it some while back, shortly after GraphiteDak did his swap.

4.10s is not an option, there is no need for a recommendation. He was asking for comments from others who have taken the plunge...

Bigger tires if you're running too many RPMs.
