Subject: KRC 408 vs. Built 408? IP: Logged
Message: Ok... IS there ANY difference in the KRC performance block vs. someone going and building a 408 from a 360 they pick up from a junk yard? I was just wondering about that...

Message: IMO, 408 cubes is 408 cubes. It's the matching of components that will net performance or not. With the right heads/cam combo, a homebuilt 408 should hang with KRC's version. I'm certain KRC has a preference on whose rods, crank, pistons, etc they use in their motors. But you have the same access to those parts too.

Message: hehe, I meant the core itself... the big hunk of metal they use... is it stronger or better built or something to stand more HP than a normal 360 block (which is where the 408 comes from)... :-D Just curious

Message: big hunk of metal? *lol* Sorry :-) Do you mean the block? Well, with the price KRC is advertising, I doubt that it's a "custom" casting. More than likely, it's just a four bolt main 360 block machined to their specs.

Message: haha I said block to begin with but I'm not very good at explaining what I want to know lol... Oh, well... I was just wondering if it were a custom cast! Anyone else believe anything different?
Thanks!

there is no need for a four bolt main unless you have a serious forced induction(turbo/ supercharger) the 4 bolt main option on any engine from krc costs a few thousand dollars there is also an R-3 race block you can buy but that's not needed unless your building it for 6or700 horse power or a forced induction

Message: KRC's 360/408 block is different than the ones you would pull out of the bone yard, thier site says they use Mopar performance blocks,,, for $9,000 they'd better! Wholly cr@p for $9k I want my engine gold and chrome plated...
Granted KRC is using top of the line components in every step of thier process, but you can build something similar (power wise, not reliability wise) for one heck a lot less. I think putting a KRC $9K engine into a street vehicle is a waste of money,,, unless your at the track every weekend. Kind of like putting a V-10 in a Dak, It's cool, but how often you gonna use that power.
D@mn, I must be gettin old... I used to have a V-8 S-10,,, now how often did I use all that power,,, to often LOL
I don't know if this holds true for Dodge, but your more likely to find a 4 bolt main block in a truck than in a car. Also, try and get a complete engine instead of just the a short block or bare block, when it comes time to assemble the engine your going to be happy you have those extra nuts, bolts and brackets. I wouldn't shy away from a vehile with front end damage unless the engine has been smacked, there's a lot of crush area in front of the engine and the engine could be perfectly fine.
Actually, if your pulling the engine yourself, you might find a smoking deal on an engine from a heavily wrecked vehicle. I bought a Ford AOD 4 speed trannny for my Mustang from a 3 year old stationwagon that had been rolled. The yard's sign said all automaitc tranny's $150 and they almost cr@pped a brick when I hauled up a $1000 4 speed tranny. Not saying your gonne find a steal like that, but it's possible.
If your thinking of using forced induction you should make that decision before building the engine,,, either build the engine for N/A or blown. If you build a mild high compression engine (9.5:1) you will be re-doing a lot of work when you install the blower, cam pistons....
408, man I wished I could play around with that stuff again, kids and other things of interest now...
Good Luck!
