Subject: Power loss @ high rpm

Message:
Hello fellow Dakkers! I have a 97 5.2L 4x4 that I have built up pretty well. My problem is that when I get to around 5200 rpm, my power seems to drop off, and the truck stops pulling. Does anyone have an idea of what I should be looking at??? This seems to have started after I replaced the speed sensor in the tranny. (Yes, I did reset the PCM and let it learn for ~350 miles). I have the Mopar PCM, along with R/T heads, M1 intake, KRC 210x cam, 2800 stall converter, etc. Any help will be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks guys!

I dont see a 50mm plus throttle body listed. Perhaps? From what I see, that could be your problem. How bout a plugged up cat?

True duals and duals with a cross pipe. I gained when I added a cross over pipe - so did a buddy of mine....a shot in the dark.

i cant see a cat being clogged and robbing it of power at that high of an RPM, that would show up at lower RPMs.... now throttle body could be an issue cause of needing air but i wouldnt lean to that..... if your useing your stock ignition coil they drop out and can keep up at that high of an RPM try useing an accel super coilor which ever type of performance coil you prefer cause they hold up at high RPM's... its also possible that your rev limiter is set to low also.... so try in one of the 2 areas.... coil or rev limiter.. i would try coil first cause of your other upgrades....

What did you pay for that KRC210 Cam ,and did you do the swap your self.
How much of a gain did you see.
I have been pondering to do the cam swap in my 99' 5.2 4x4 slt for a while but it seems like alot of work.
Any input would be great.
Thanx

I have the Accel coil, and I have also hand ported the throttle body. It acts like the PCM is pulling back some spark and fuel. I also have the true dual setup with a crossover pipe, so breathing is not a problem at all.

Carl, I bought the cam, lifters, pushrods, and valvesprings for around $600, and while I was at it, I bought a complete gasket set including a high-volume oil pump. For the rebuild, I have about $800-$1000 invested. My dad and I did all of the work ourselves. (We wanted to build one more engine before we both got too old to remember how!!! LOL) As far as the gains go, I don't have any dyno numbers yet, but I LOVE that cam. It has a great "cammy" sound, and when that truck hits 3000 rpm, it just slams your head into the back of the seat. I would recommend doing the swap, the amount of work isn't that bad, you just have to pay attention to what you're doing. Before this little problem I'm currently having started, that little 4x4 was still pulling when I'd hit the rev limiter at 6000 rpm.

just out of curiosity, doesn't the computer have a rev limiter or something that will keep your engine from reving too high?
