Subject: Soft brake issue IP: Logged
Message: I've been battling this for a while now. I have a 3" lift running 16" wheels on 33" tires. I understand that my brake response is going to be slower with the bigger tires, but this level of degradation doesn't seem normal to me. I'm running Powerslot rotors up front with Raybestos PG+ pads in the front and back. I can stand on the pedal and not lock up the tires. If I pump the pedal, the brake response seems better, but not that great. I've checked the master cylinder and booster per my Haynes manual troubleshooting process. I changed the fluid and bled all of the lines. I'm running out of ideas. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Brian

Message: I'm running 33's on mine too. i have crappy rotors that can't even be turned anymore and probably needs pads soon too. I can still lock em' up though, even with the crappy parts, so you must have another issue goin on. They squeak a lot but still stop great. i checked out the back shoes and they have cracks all in them, still locks and stops. i'm going to replace the back ones probably this weekend. The tire size is definitly NOT my issue.

Message: my brakes suck on my Dak too. Could be the cheap Meineke job. But Raybestos are supposed to be good linings. And what does rubber brake lines have to do with braking? My durango R/T has rubber lines and it stops way better than my Dak and it's heavier??

Message: Depends on the quality of the hoses. Cheaper hoses expand as you apply the brakes giving you spungy brakes. most likely you got longer hoses with the lift kit> if there rubber, you found the problem. If not then it has to be inproper bleeding even if your totally convinced you did a good job bleeding.

Message: I had a similar problem with a mushy pedal. Couldnt lock up or even stop remotely fast. I followed the Haynes manual for bleeding the brake system as well as changed out calipers and seated the pads several times. I still dont really know what was wrong. I ended up taking it in to local Firestone shop for $80 and they couldnt even tell me. They simply said they took the caliper off and looked at the system and when they put it back together it worked. I did have them do a brake fluid flush at the same time so that may have helped. I have heard that the Haynes manual instructions for bleeding the master cylinder is not entirely correct, this couldve been part of my problem also.
I have 33s with stock rotors and Performance Friction semi-metallic pads and noticed no real decrease in stopping power over the 31s, since the above problem was unrelated.

Message: Hmmm...thanks for the input. I still have the factory rubber lines installed. The body lift did not require me to change those. I would put on the stainless lines, but I cannot find a kit anywhere for my '98 4x4. Do you guys recommend a vacuum bleeder? I can "rent" one from Autozone to try that.
Thanks.

Message: Factory lines should not cause a problem. Pretty much leaves air in lines. Have them bleed by a professional.

Message: Brian98, please post your results. I have had the same problems after I replaced my pads. I was going to do the rear brakes then take it in to get bled. Good luck with it.

Message: Ok, i haven't forgotten about you guys! I attempted to bleed my brakes using the Mityvac vacuum pump. I pumped everything out of the master cylinder resevoir and filled it with fresh fluid. I then bled the driver's side rear without any problems. I am now trying to bleed the passenger side rear, but I can't get the air bubbles to stop. I fill up the Mityvac canister, refill the master cylinder, pump the brakes, and try again. The bubbles continue. I have done this step at least a dozen times and the bubbles continue. Any suggestions? I don't think I have a leak because the vacuum pump holds pressure and there is nothing leaking on the ground. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Brian

Message: I have had the same problem when using the vacuum pump to bleed brakes or a clutch. It would pull air bubbles through the bleeder screw. I would use some teflon tape around the screws, and attempt it again. Good luck with it and keep us posted.

Message: Also might be to your advantage to reduce vacuum. Use just enough to keep bubbles moving but not flying out fast. this is my way. Works well.
