I have spent a pile of money on my truck to get it how I want it, my engine runs great now, my gears are in it now but one thing is driving me up the wall my trans was programed by a bunch of chimps. What idiots came up with the parramiters for this thing it's a slushamatic it is lazy in down shifting it takes forever for it to find a gear when you slow to 15 mph and get pack on the gas it is in 3rd gear and dosen't shift down till the gas pedal is depressed 3/4 the way down every trans I have owned from TH400 to 4L60E's go to 2nd automaticly at these speeds until they upshift. If you go and pass someone it downsifts to 3rd before going to 2nd.On the whole this is the most unresponsive trans I have ever driven. What can I do to make this thing shift better by the way it's a 04 QC 4.7 4X4 3.92 gears 545RFE thankyou for any help you could provide.

Has it had the proper service in the past ? My 45RFE (which is basically the same tranny with one less overdrive gear programmed) shifts quite responsively.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Maybe tweek the TPS sensor. That helped some people. I heard that the TPS which is riveted in can vary fron truck to truck.

I did the mod, but mine was pretty good already.

Do a search for it.

I do admit that the electronic control wont let this thing skip gears like the old tranny's. If you shift manually you can get it to downshift sooner if you really need it to.

Calibrate the TPS and see if that helps. Mine wont skip gears, but it does downshift easily on moderate throttle.

My TPS is set at .80 volt. I have had the truck since it had 5000 miles on it and I am religous about services. One thing that helped firm up the shifts is Lucas transtreatment I installed last filter change and I used Mopar ATF+4. But this did nothing for my shiftpoints, my trans dose good at WOT but it sucks just driving normal, if I could do one thing that would make me much happier is when you slow for a turn at about 15 it would go to 2nd before I get on the gas, at 10mph it goes to 1st but it never wants to go to 2nd, its very annoying makes me feel like I'm romping on my truck to make it go. I wonder when superchips is going to remeber us poor souls with NGC controled 4.7's I believe a superchips programer will help.

read the part between the red flashing things. And if you haven't read the thread that "here ya go" gave a couple or three posts up from this one, read it too. If youre not comfortable working inside your auto tranny, then never mind, and keep waiting for a chip.

I also have the 45RFE, didn't realize they changed the programming so much when they started with the 5-45RFE.

Mine will drop straight into 2nd from 4th and TC lockup. Hits hard and takes off.

Come to think of it though, my co-workers 04 Ram HEMI (5-45RFE also) drops to 4th, 3rd, then 2nd on a WOT drop...its SLoooooW!. The throttle-by-wire doesn't help either, I can't stand it!!

But, as for a solution. Not sure how to get the PCM to shift differently, I would love to get mine to hold 4th and TC lockup longer, but it won't. I am sure you'll like the new shift kit...just came out.

Yeah, read about it here:

Looking at getting one sometime in the future. I just had my tranny flushed and don't really feel like dropping the pan already. That, and its WINTER...ughh.

Superchips will definitely firm up your shifts, mine shifts hard now.

However it still has the same lag when I romp on it, it takes a sec to downshift, and usually only drops to the previous gear.

I guess that's a common symptom for our 5-45rfe's

Anyway, If you want the auto to go to a gear sooner just pull it down manually. That's what I always do.

Hey peeping,
I'd love to be able to drive a stick again.
I'd also love to have my left leg back. Why don't you go to Iraq and bring it back for me.
Maybe then I could have a "real tranny" in my Dakota.
