I have a 2001 dakota QC 4x4 with the 4.7 Litre. I was thinking about trying to convert closer to the 2005 4.7Litre HO's specs by using the cams and intake/throttle body of the HO, or a similar mopar setup. Will i get the gain to 260 hp by doing this, or is there more to it. Also, is it going to be a huge hit to my mileage or not to bad? I have a flowmaster dual exhaust set-up and a cold-air intake with K&N filter already.

It wont hurt mileage unless you just put your foot into it more like most of us do.

As for the 260HP not sure you will get that from them mods.

The 4.7 HO has a different crank, higher compression 9.7:1 pistons, and I think the heads are slightly different including better valve springs. The PCM is different as well.

Installing the Ho cams and intake is easy and gives gains. It also moves the power higher in the RPM's. But it doesn't mean you have a HO by doing those things. Some people call theirs a 4.7 HO because of them few parts swapped. Kind of makes you laugh :)

Depending on what you want for power. You may want to check into BIGGER cams from KRC.

For example, now that I have the gearing for it, I would go for a few steps bigger than the HO cams I have now.

Yup exactly what graph said. Are you planning to do the swap yourself? If not a superchips or custom flash might be the biggest bang for you buck.

The HO TB is the same, although there are larger aftermarket ones available if you want to go larger. Just changing the cams is said to be good for most of the torque gain of the HO package, and won't drive the power band higher like changing the intake - you'll see a gain across the whole range. Then think about a custom flash (not dealer), or superchips for more spark advance and maybe some different fuel mapping. I did the flash right after the cams and felt similar gains; with no loss of milage. You definitely will still be a bit shy on hp as you don't have the higher compression heads (9.7 vs 9.2:1) but you'll notice the difference.

Oh it's the heads that give the compression change? I read the specs on the jeep site but didn't notice what was different other than the compression was higher so I assumed it was the piston.

Could be the pistons - either way he'll still be down that much in compression from the HO set up...

Yup.

What I want to know is, can I use the HO crank and rods in a standard block?

I am curious because I have to buy a crank and rods for my 4.7 powered project car.

That engine right there. Going in my '74 Duster.

davekamphuis;
My advice to you would be:
'02 HO intake manifold, HO cams, and I know a guy that can fix you up with a true 68 or 70mm throttle body. He is over on DodgeTalk and his handle is SQC. You will then need to redo your exhaust, get some gears (graph can tell you all about that), and a flash or superchips programmer.
Good luck and hope this helps you...

Dave,
I added HO cams, a homemade intake, bored my throttle body out myself and added a Superchips programmer to a 2000 4.7l with 107k miles on it and woke that puppy up. You will definately see gains with at least that.

I also agree with what Graph said, as long as you keep your gas pedal off the floor most of the time, you'll stay out of the gas station every few days.

i had a 2000 dakota (same setup as your 01) and the ho cams are an awesome gain. it is not the intake that gives you any more power. why don't you try the cam by itself first. then if you want to raise the rpm band by about 500rpms, get a 03/04 intake. that intake is tuned better for the 5400 shift point our trucks are programmed with. the 02 ho intake has ridiculously short intake runners, 10 inches i believe, and puts the rpm band too high to use for every day driving. i would only recomend that for 5 spd trannys, usually. anyways, try the cam first, see what happens. jason
