Subject: what are lash caps?

i am deciding on a cam for my 4.7 dakota. up in the air is the good ol' h.o. cam. what i would really like is to get dan the fastman's 206 cam or the krc 206 cam. what i'm not sure about is the lash caps that come on the cams. apparantly they grind a 200 cam to some specs then add lash caps to give it a bigger lope. is that true? it seems like something else to go wrong to me. have any of you guys done the 206 or does somebody know enough about lash caps to enlighten me. thanks, jasonsdakota

Your stock cam and rockers use lash caps. You are not adding anything that wasn't there before.

I've had stock cams and HO cams and neither one had lash caps. When I had the KRC 206s installed you have to put in lash caps. No big deal they just set on top of the valve stem. Just make sure you don't drop one and cover up the oil return holes so one doesn't fall down one.

good advice fldak,
how do they secure to the valve stem and is there any potential reliability problem of going with the 206 cams and lash caps vs the ho cam?

They sit on top of the valve stem between it and the cam follower (or whatever you call it). Once the cam is installed and torqued down it stays in place. Just make sure the cam followers are in place and don't move while bolting the cam down. In other words they can sometimes slip out place when putting the cam in. Just check'em as you go along. I found paid a mechanic to do the actual install, I was not confident in my abilities to do it myself. I would rather pay someone $200 to do the job right.
I have no idea about a reliability problem, it has not quite been a year since the install.

I did the krc 218 with the caps. No big deal. Any intermediate mechanic could do the work. Just take your time. Expect 8 hour to do it and have another car around so you can run to the parts store. No reliabity issues at all. This is commin practice from over head cam designers. Its like adding roller rockers in a push rod motor but for a hell of a lot less.

Oh by the way, when you take the cams sprocket off, Make sure you zip tie them to the timing chain. This helped a lot for me. Thanks to whom ever suggested it on this site.

jayfitzy,
how did you like the 218 cams. I'm saving up for those right now. I haven't been able to get on here to get any opinions, so could you give me one? Did the power really increase, sound change, lope at idle? Let me know1
Thanks,
Jason

FLDak How do you like your 206 cams. I've just ordered mine. I'm pretty pumped. Was there a significant gain?

The 218 are great. I have had them for sometime now with no problems. I suggest that you change the cams, run it for a week the change the plugs, run those for a week, then get chip or tuner. This will really wake your truck up with that cam. I never changed the valve springs and I wish I had though it is not needed. I perfer the safety of the new springs

So far ok with the stock springs?

No valve float at 6500 RPM's?

For all we know the stock springs may be rated enough for them cams after all?

I would strongly suggest replacing the springs. I do have valve float in the upper RPM range but with the stock computer i am shifting before valve float occurs. I will change out the springs this summer. Not sure how I am going to do it though. What spring compression tool do you use? I was going to wait because to replace the spring. I saw this site that makes solid valve lashes. The rustangs that run this pick upwards to 20 hp. I know that is more than I would expect to see but the dodge lash adjusters fail over time. I am sure the high lift cam does not help. Maybe I will call the manufacturer to see if they can make me up a set. I don’t know if there is any down side to a solid lash vs. hydraulic on a street vehicle.
