 Subject: Exhaust in front of rear tire.

I have heard that having the exhaust come out of the side in front of the tire can cause some bad tread wear due to heat coming from the exhaust. Is this true? I mean, it seems to make sense to me, but just wondering. If so, I was thinking about getting the sniper body kit with the exhaust because I love the way it looks but the exhaust is coming out in front of the tire on it. Just curious if anyone could tell me the effects it would have.

I dont like them in front of the tire. If the exhaust were to spit out anything (even condensated water) I wouldnt want it to spit on my tires. It can ruin traction and looks.
Gotta love them on ramps!

When I do true duals, from the precats, that's where I'm gonna exit, in front of the rear tire, dual (true), on my Quad cab.
It's louder in the cab, so I'll use a decent muffler, and there is less bends and pipe, so you'll have less flow velocity restriction.
Amazing what getting rid of my third cat did, with the stock system.

when i first put my flowmaster on my truck, i had the exhaust in front of the rear tire. it was extremely loud inside the truck to the point that my radio wasnt loud enough to hear over it and it was impossible to cary on a conversation while driving. it did cause my tire to wear faster as well. think about it, the hot exhaust is heating up the tire making it stickier. on a race track or dragstrip, this is a good thing. but on the road with constant turning and all it eats the tire up. ford had a huge problem with this on there mid to late 90's f-150s when they had the factory exhaust exiting in front of the rear tire. customers were constantly having to repace just that one tire.

Then why would someone want to buy the sniper kit with the exhaust? If anyone has the sniper body kit w/ exhuast , could you tell me if you notice any tread wear?

the third cat on a stock Dak exhaust, (not all of them came with one), has no 02 sensors before or after it, only the precats on the headers have the )2 sensors.
I live just south of Houston, and it passes emissions fine every time, w/o any O2 sims, etc.
There is only one third cat, hence the name, 3rd cat.
** I re-read your post. If you remove the precats, you'll throw a code. That's what the emmissions in my area reads now, thru the obd2 port. You'll need an O2 sim, and I've been told that the emissions computers can tell if it's a simms.
Tghe 3rd has no sensors, etc.

I have heard that the problem with exhaust coming out in front of tires is that it can cause the finish on the wheel to go bad. Ford F-150's use to do that from the factory one year (can't remember what exact year, late 90's), but stopped doing it for this reason. That's what I know about it, though it doesn't look bad. Hope this helps with your decision.

If you want the exhaust to dump out in front of the tire do it, it will not wear out the tire or f-ck with the finish. Who dreams up this crap, if you had 700 hp with an 800* exhaust temp blowing right on the tire maybe.

Ok cheif, apparently you don't think I know what I am talking about, so contact Ford and find out yourself if it f-cks with the finish. I'm not saying running it out infront of the tire is bad, but you'll have to see for yourself if you decide to do it RyanH.

Dak Rat - Damage may not be just due to the heat, but the corrosive nature of the exhaust gas. I once let a bad tailpipe go for a while, and the exhaust gas hitting the spare tire dry rotted it badly. I wouldn't be at all surprised that it could damage the finish on some rims.

Kowalski, With the exhaust blowing right onto the spare tire it would not surprise me. The exhaust exiting in front of the tire is not going to cause finish problems. Myself and a couple of friends have ran our exhaust systems that way for years, I have never seen any problems on any of our vehicles with finish issues on custom wheels or tire rotting.
Cheiflowpar, Ford ran side exit exhaust on the SVT's until the trucks were discontinued.

I'd just be worried about in cab noise.
I like to make OTHER people (and their alarms) hear it, but not deafen me in my own cab :)
My bro in law has them dumped before the tires (true duals 2 1/4"). Louder than mine duped behind the tires (true duals 2 1/2")
Mine flows awesome with the pipes runniing the full length.
I had the SINGLE cat. I installed two NEW 2 1/2" cats O2 sensor before and after the one right side cat only.
No codes.

Removing the third cat will dyno a small gain, I really don't think you'd actually notice it. (people seem to notice gains when dynos show none, however, go figure) - ah the all elusive 'butt dyno'.
You will notice a slightly louder, lower tone, with a bit of a rumble when revving it. It's slight and causes no in the cab drone.
I had mine done professionally, with a aluminized piece custom bent and welded in, still no rust in over a year. a good $30.
