Subject: Cold Air Intake filter question
IP: Logged

Message:
I just recently purchased a cai for my 3.9 99 dakota off ebay and put it on and was mildly impressed. I got a little better mpg and little more power in mid top rpms. Howerer, on the end of the cone where most filters have a cap there is some very fine wire mesh screen. Is this enough to filter out the dust or will this setup ruin my engine? I live on gravel road so there is some dust in the air. I'd like to think i didn't waste my money but i guess i can purchase another filter.

If you mean that there's a fine mesh screen and then it's open, then no it isn't enough to keep the dirt out. Sounds like you got a damaged filter. Either send it back or make an end cap for it.

There isn't a hole in it . There is just fine wire mesh on the end.

What's under the mesh? Anything?

If it has a K&N filter, go to their web site and look up the PN to see what it's supposed to look like. Filters usually have a more finished look.

How do you know you got more anything, anywhere?

Did you do a before and after dyno?

And is it truely CAI? Does it only pull air from the outside, and not from the engine bay?
