No problems at all. On a flat ground or a slight down hill I leave it in OD. Probably doesn't hurt anything, but I don't like to keep the revs up for that long a period.

As long as it isn't constantly locking and unlocking the torque converter, you'll be fine.

Also, if you are climbing a grade and it unlocks the TC, drop OD or the tranny temps will climb very fast.

I'm not sure how the tranny behind your 5.9 (44re probably) shifts, but my 45RFE will lock the TC in 3rd if I shut off the OD which is good for tranny temps and fuel milage when towing.

Well, caulk04
as I have mentioned, it is the 46re that I have. The reason for my ? is that my last trip towing my 25ft Prowler from a Pismo camping trip, I was on the flats going along just fine then I noticed twice that the RPMS momentarly increased as If the trans was slipping. It only slowly climbed a few 100 RPMs. I imeadaetly dropped out of O.D. and drove to the nearest rest stop and checked the fluid engine running and in nuetral. The level was fine and no burn smell. I drove it the rest of the way home out of O.D. I just don't like running the motor for long periods of time in higher RPM's if I do not have too. Has anybody else have had similar situation?

i pull my 30' companion travel trailer with my 93 318 4x4 auto. i never use over drive. i could maintain speed with over drive on, but the overdrive unit puts a bigazz strain on the tranny itself. so with that said, it will overheat easily when towing just about anything. lots of people like to think its ok to tow in overdrive just cause they dont slow down. they obviously dont have temp guages on their tranny.

If the torque converter is locked and the tranny isn't slipping, OD isn't going to make it run any hotter.

The purpose of shutting off the OD is to reduce load when it is slipping or if the torque converter is unlocked because both of those create heat.

Well, I am going to drop the pan and look for anything obvious. From now on I will TOW only OUT of O.D. I have noticed very little change in fuel mileage in or out of O.D. No matter what I do to my 5.9, I still loose my shorts at the pump!
