Subject: Cam(s) 5.2 vs 4.7
IP: Logged

Message:
Would you see more or less of a gain in hp and torque on a cam swap with a 5.2 or a 4.7 or would they be about equal?
Lift and duration on the new cam being equal.

Thanx

There are no comparisons. If you made them both of equal lift and duration one of them would run like crap.

do you own both a 5.2 and a 4.7? i would much rather swap the cam on a 4.7 than a 5.2 for its much easier. i would say the 5.2 cause i own one.

and some mods to slow it down!

Sorry. If you increased them both equal amounts for lift and duration.

You mean swap BOTH cams on the 4.7 since it has TWO :)

Yeah. It is easier. You don't have to pull the distributor, intake, radiator, drain water, etc etc etc!

What I mean is, if I increase the 5.2's valve lift from .432 inches to say .472 (.040 change).
And increase the 4.7's valve lift .040. Which change would see more power increase.Duration increases being equal also(5 degree increase on the 5.2 and on the 4.7).

the 5.2 will make 14% more power at idle and 22% more at redline over the 4.7. and thats the truth.

and some mods to slow it down!

Thanx, Toolfan, Graphite.
So then the extra effort might be worth it.

I thought toolfan was being sarcastic with those numbers.

You weren't for real were ya tool fan? :p

Not that I have looked into it or anything. But never heard anyone talking power AT idle. LOL! I think he was joking.

There might be dyno software out there that can give you those kind of figures but it is still pointless. Why would you limit the cams to equal changes? One engine might make better use of more lift than the other or it might make use of more duration or seperation. If you put limits on the cam design one engine is bound to suffer. Pick the best cam for each engine, look at some dyno tests and then decide which is more responsive.

Anyone know a website where I can get some dyno results for the 318 (Cams or gears results).I'm sure that question has been asked alot, but I thought I'd ask any way ( maybe I should have just asked that in the first place).
