Subject: Cam Question? IP: Logged
Message: Guys are always saying that they got their cams for however much EACH.
Do the 4.7's have 2? Cause my Haynes Manual ( which obviously isn't a bible or anything)
says that the 97'-99' only has 1.
Does this make it easier to swap out for a performance cam?
Because it says that I have to remove the intake manifold, valve covers, rocker arms, pushrods, timing chain, radiator, air conditioning condenser and the distributor and distributor drive gear.
Is this what everybody had to do to swap their cams, cause it seems like that would take longer than the 4-5 hours that I hear it takes some guys?

Message: yes the 4.7 is a sohc and has a cam located in each head.
on the 318 you will be remove what is all in the way of the old cam. that is a lot of sh!t. there is one cam for the 318 and it is harder to replace than the two on the sohc 4.7. for the cam that is in the 318 is located in the block and the 4.7 is in the head.

Message: Yeah, the 4.7 is a SOHC engine which implies 1 cam per head.
The 5.2/5.9 engines are pushrod engines and require a LOT more disassembly for a cam swap. I've never done a pushrod engine cam swap so I'm of no help to ya...sorry.
SOHC swap is super easy though. Most of the work is getting engine peripherals out of the way so you can remove the valve covers, then its easy.
