Subject: 360 crank in a 318?

Message:
i was wondering if you could put the 360 crank in the 318 and make more power or is this just stupid?

if the main bearing journals are the same size, i don't see why not. check this page out:

It wont fit... the 318 has a main bearing journal diameter of 2.4995 to 2.5005 and the 360 has 2.8095 to 2.8105

nothing a machine shop couldnt fix..

i believe it will put you around 346-350 cube depending on bore.

i was think if i rebuilt my 318 i would want to stroke it. i think its possible but they probably make a good stroker crank that would give you more power than the 360 crank would.

will achieve 390ci?

thanks for the info you guys

toolfan, the post above wasn't me. it was - jnava75@hotmail.com, whoever that is?

anyway, i am not sure about acheiving the 390 cubes without the .030 overbore.

how much do you think something like that would cost?

it would take a lot of fuel and air to feed that 390ci

One of my buddies and I just got done with a frankendodge. Took the crank and pistons from the 360 with a cracked block, and put them in a 318. The only hairy part was the piston stroke. The 360 has a stroke that is just over 1/2 in longer than the 318, but it stayed in the cylinder with no prblems. He got the machining done for about $300. The parts he used were from engines he had just laying around (of course the gaskets, valve seats/guides, springs, etc were new)
If I remeber correctly it came out to be a 333 cu.in. or a 5.4L

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

how great was the power increase?

what all needed to be machined?

do you think this mod was a good one, and was it worth doing.

I don't know what the power increase was at the moment. We are currently looking for an NV3500 to replace the old @ss piece of sh!t a500 thats in the truck right now (89 convertable dakota), so we are waiting. I'd have to get an exact list of things that were machined, but right off hand, I know that: cylinder bores (4.001") the 5.2 was orginally at 3.913", Main bearing caps were machined out about 0.5", slight recesses machined into pistyon heads themselves(i forget the depth) due to the stroke was about 0.3" longer in the 5.9. We used the same 5.2 valves, cam, etc because of the longer stroke. It sounded awesome when we started it up. We haven't seen it in action, but I believe it was worth the effort. Engine cost for all machine and gaskets/etc was around the 900 dollar mark. The tranny will be at least another grand. These engines are extremely easy to work on and modify(if they are on a stand OUT of the engine compartment), so you could always use the 360 crank with another bigger set of pistons, you would just have to keep an eye on the cylinder wall thickness.

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

you bored the motor .088?? the 318 should of been 3.91 bore, so chances are it's bored over even more.

if you put a 360 crank (3.58 stroke) in a 318 (3.313 stroke), then you'd have 344 ci with the factory 3.91 bore.

if you bore that 318 .030 over, then you have 349 ci

if you, somehow, bored the 318 .091, then you'd have a 360, with the 3.58 crank.

not sure how you thought you'd get anything but 360 ci, if you're using the exact same rotating assembly from a 360... lol

I am sorry, I realized what I said...the 333ci(i got over zealous with the 3 key)(should have been 344 ci) was if we would have used the 318 crank with no machining, don't qoute me on the math, it's my buddy's project, I'm just brawn:) I called him and he said the motor was bored 0.091" over with a k-monel sleeve that brought the bore to 0.0881" over.
toolfan - the convertable dakota was a limited production option in 89, I forget how many they made but I think I read somewhere that it was only like 1000-5000. They are mainly over in the middle east area now.

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

if your buddy did that, seems as though he wasted a lot of money, because if he actually did do that, he made that 318 a 360. He sleeved/bored the block to fit a 360 piston, and he probably cut the journals to fit the 360 crank... so now he has an overpriced 360. lol

if he kept it stock 3.91 bore and put the 3.58" crank in it, it would be a 344" motor.

Kind of right:) But I do have to say that he spent exactly $824.26 in parts($215.07) and machining($609.19 he did some himself and had a friend true it up) on the engine. The 96 that he got the 318 out of was free(abandon vehicle) and the crank and pistons were free from another vehicle another friend had from a previous rebuild. Most rebuilt 360's are between $1700 and $4000 so he didn't spend too much.

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.
