Subject: Ordered me some 4.56 gears tonight!!!
IP: Logged

OK. I'm taking one for the team and will be slapping in some 4.56's to see how they work!

Naw. Actually I'm getting that ratio to tow a 20 foot Toy Hauler "letting the gears do the work".

PLus it should be quick as sh*t from the get go. I've got 3.55 and open diff now. Ordered 4.56 front and rear and a LSD for the rear. Hope to have by this weekend.
Will take pix of the install and video of the test run(s). I expect the tires to really bark during shifts now (5-45RFE auto).

If the 4.56's are too extreme, a fix will be 32" tires next tire purchase.
I have 29's now.

you're gonna be pulling some revs for sure, but nothing crazy. it'd be worth it. i went from 355 to 410 in mine and it was a blast, still the best highway mod ive done by far.

enjoy all the added grunt when you get em in, not to mention the limited slip!

Thats going to be too much gear for your truck...but maybe 31"-32" tall tires should be ok like you said.

my buddy has got some 4.56's in his camaro w/ a 4 speed tranny. it's set up for 1/8 mile drags so the top speed is obviously going to bite the pillow but for towing it's a great choice.

Mikes99Dakota, yeah it will bump the R's up. Closer to 3K at highway speeds. But the 4.7 does have less recipricating weight and other goodies making it more economical at 3K than say a 5.2
Still going to use MORE GAS unloaded on the highway.
I'll got with taller tires next time IF the R's are too high for my liking.

But my choice to 4.56 was TOWING slightly over the max rating. And that for regular family drives when NOT towing we have a hooked up Grand Caravan we should be driving anyway for those times.

CIty driving should not even notice much diff in MPG if I drive normal. But it sure is going to rip some a$$ out of the hole now!!

1hotkakota, you bet. Have to see if my 4WD can almost keep up with your 2WD after the gears and LSD. You saw my traction problems :p

GraphiteDak, You always have your own remedies to cure your possible probs. That is good.
I think that a 4.56 is more like a niche application, as you sugested. It would not be too pleasant to drive a V8 truck under normal circunstances w/ that gearing. As to the lsd, it is like driving another truck, specially when the right foot is excited.
I don`t really think that you`ll wait your tires to get that bad before their replacement for ones bigger, to compensate a little for the shorter gearing.
I supose you are considering a loss of stability, braking, cornering, etc w/ the bigger tires .
I have pulled a 7000 lb trailer w/ my 3.92 lsd and 255/65/15 (+ - 26 or 27 in) and i never wanted any shorter than that.
I wish you good luck and will check your findings.

There is no substitute for rear drive w/ lsd and power.

Are you sure your stock tires are only 29" ? Most of the 16" rubber I see on the newer Daks look about as tall as the 31x10.5x15s that came on my truck. Might want to think about 33s if you find that gearing on the short side; 31s work well with my 4.10s.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

I would have to have some huge tires before I'd want that ratio. I wouldn't go any deeper than 4.10.

I used some sort of tire size calculator once to see they equalled 29.5 " or soemthing.

Plus they WERE smaller than a friends 31 10.50's

Maybe I'll go measure them tonight.

Earlier this year someone posted doing the 4.56 with STOCK tires and said they absolutely LOVED it.

BTW. I've long calculated my RPM's and posted it a few times here.

So come to think of it, 29 should be right, as my calculations are exact to actual....

I thought about that too.

But the truck would still do 140MPH even AFTER I swap gears. Probably EASIER I am sure :)

Anyway. AT 80MPH my RPM's will be 2900. If I go up to 32's I'll drop to 2600 RPM's.

People forget that 20 yrs ago truck engines ran 3K on the highway all the time before they had overdrive. And them engines were not built for higher RPM's.

I was thinking about going to 4.10 from my 3.90lsd on my 994x4. How much are those gears going to run you?

Or should i step up to the 4.56's with my 33x12.5's?

I can burn the tires from a dead stop with the 3.90lsd but I also am pushing some boost too em.

i think i would stay at 60mph with the 4.56 so i'm getting the best gas mileage.
you have a point graphite but now a days with gas prices being $3.00g its nice to run at 1800rpm at 60mph.

Yeah of course. But funny how ppl forget (especially the younger guys who never DROVE something old with no OD) how engines had to run just to do 65 MPH, etc.

Believe me, it wont be doing 80MPH. I just base my calculations at 80 instead of the usual 60 because that's usually where I set my cruise control. With the trailer I will be worried to maintain the 75MPH limit from Phoenix to Yuma.
Just because of wind and all that.

Ha ha very funny. I'm not THAT old.

But yeah, TV's were starting to get remotes when I was a kid. But they had a CORD conencted to them that changed the channel knob via a motor!!!!

And yeah. Color was out. But I remember having several B&W TV's as well. Getting Color in my room at one point was a big deal.

My daughter(s) have never had smaller than a 19" Color TV. Stereo TV even!

my old jeep cj7 had 4.10 gears in it with a 4 speed manny and 33-12.5r15 on it. going 70 down the highway, it was sittin at or above 3k and it redlined at 4k with the 4.4 inline 6. i swapped in a 5 speed tranny and it helped out alot. i could criuse at 70mph at 2k rpm. i would love to upgrade the diff in my dakota. right now i have 3.55 open diff. i would love to go to either a 3.92 or a 4.10 with LSD. i just found out though that my truck has been deathflashed, so i think that i will save up for a superchip for now.
