question: doesn't every turbocharged car run on a "used" turbo?

granted, yes, i see your point, some of the turbos you find on ebay are gonna be worthless. hell i've heard of some that are epoxied together. but that's not to say you can't find a legit turbo used, just like any other part. dodgedakotas.com member intensedak39 had a used turbo from a late 80s buick v6 when he turboed his 3.9.

I believe the mustang came stock with a garrett t3 super 60.
Try contacting www.cheapturbos.com they could probably help you find a good turbo for your set-up. And Not all turbo's have lag, a properly matched turbo will have an almost seemless transition..
If your looking for a turbo that makes great top-end power you will have to sacrifice low end (lag)...as with everything...change one thing it effects something else.
Oh and definatly dump the oil back into the oil pan, that's the best way of doing it.

I’m in the process of doing this to my 2002 v6 QC also. I looked at the underhood versions and the STS…. ALA mongrel @
http://dakotausa.com/vBulletin/showthread.php?t=25826&pp=20 and have come to the conclusion I can do the same thing for just under 2k. I’m taking my time and getting the best deals on parts My route will be the rear mount with initial boost of around 6 PSI

Would be about 5-6 hundred cheaper than that if DC had put a real ECU in it rather than the nonuserfriendly PCM. Since the MAP sensor dodge put in these only reads vacuum . Piggyback is the only route to solve the inadequacies of the PCM and right now I’m looking at Split Seconds FTC in conjunction to a wideband 02 for finer tuning.

Things already installed
180 degree thermostat
Hughes engine plenum repair (Factory repair only lasted 20k….. then started eating oil….rough idle etc…) lot smoother now
V8 throttle body
OBDII datalogger…… makes me smarter on how PCM handles different throttle/weather issues

Things in the garage
Intake plumbing (2.5 inch aluminum tubing…. Elbows etc)
Remote oil pump and plumbing
$275 HY35 holset from 2004 Cummins 2500series pickup(only 100 miles on turbo before it was pulled for upgrade to HX35)
Gauges (boost/ oil pressure to monitor return oil from turbo after oil pump)
$ 30lb accel injectors (got from someone who never installed them on his mustang)
Tial 38mm wastegate (don’t even think about the internal wastegate on a holset….. 30lb spikes would detonate this engine lol)
Bailey BOV from Porsche 944
4 inch PVC with elbows to direct filter up into fender /wheelwell gap slipfit on this holset
3.5 inch elbow welded to 4 inch flange to provide initial downpipe

Things still on my want list
Split second FTC. Adjusts fuel/spark and has internal MAP to monitor vac/pressure
PLX wideband o2 (missed one for $80 on ebay)

Installation plan (probably in the spring since being overseas military makes finding parts slow)
1 Initial install will be with the Split second /30lb injectors and wideband o2 that way I can get the initial trim and idle characteristics set up
2. Then install turbo and plumbing and fine tune.
3. Go to exhaust shop and have them weld up remaining 3 inch from downpipe to stock exit location

that's a big turbo... you'll probably be at redline before that 3.9 can make that turbo build boost.

Just have to see if it’s too big….. I know its got room to grow lol….. 2.3 liter ford guys squeeze them on and get boost by 3-3.5k…. DSM guys squeeze the even bigger HX35 on (has the huge 14-16 cm2 housing takes forever to spool) and they see boost by 3.8k… so hoping to see some boost by about 2.5-2.7k….. just have to wait and see. Eventual plan is once I get everything set up put a 2 stage boost switch in with a wet weather economy boost of about 6 psi and a dry weather autobahn acceleration curve of about 9 psi

i ran a TB0301 on my 3.9 and saw full boost (7-8) at around 2200 rpms. With a turbo like that one you mentioned, it would take a lot more rpms to get any boost out of that turbo on that motor, and you're going to be introduced to the world of turbo lag.

i spend as little money as possible and didnt ever really get to finish it. It ran great, no doubt, but would of been even more stronger if it had better fuel management

i never had it dynoed but raced a few people down the road on it. I obliterated a regular cab R/T off a stop light... he found me a couple days later and was like "is that truck turbocharged??? you kicked the shiat out of me!!'

i race a LT1 camaro and beat it, no sure of mods.

i also beat a 95 Mustang GT - short shifter, headers, h-pipe, ignition, cold air intake and 3.73 gears. I just beat him barely, but enough. We chatted at a gas station afterwords and told me about his stang. I opened my hood and showed him a V6 and he was like "dayum!!".

Jason52,
Just rebuild ( if you have one already) the one you have.

It will cost a little less than a new or near new one and you'll
have a bunch more power...

my two cents.

yeah take you pos v6 3.9 colt back to the v6 board!! j/k

rebuild as Fed said. the block on the 3.9/5.2/5.9 are extremely strong like 1,000,000 miles strong.
when you do rebuild it keep the compression low and have forged pistons.

and some mods to slow it down!
