Message: yep. ANY thing that keeps the engine cooler with help boost power... BUT it will also affect emmissions.. know how they test, and you can beat the system though! I have a 01, I've added a FIPK, 180 thermo, tranny cooler, PUNCHED out the rear cat, knocked 3/4 inch hole through the precats, and ported and polished the intake and heads, including cutting down the runners about 4 inches in the intake, and a 2 chamber flowmaster turndown.... the RULE of thumb, is as LONG as its after 96, and doesn't have a CHECK ENGINE light on, you should pass... thats in Georgia.
the 180 thermo is cheap, easy, and you should see some mild gains... build for a system and you'll see your best gains...

Message: Maybe. Anything that cools the air charge will produce more power - that's simple phsyics and common knowledge. But will a lower coolant temp increase power? Don't know. Apparently, nobody else does either. Lot's of folks claim that this is true, but don't present any evidence to back it up. It may be, I don't know. But I seriously doubt it.
OTOH, there are certain mods that really benifit from a cooler head temp. For example, most aftermarket computers, chips, and reprogrammers advance the timing enough to cause detonation. Cooler head temps help prevent this.
You don't say what year or engine you have, or what mods you have. But some stock engines will not perform well simply by making this change. I did it to my '01 5.9. It was terrible. Low speed performance and idle quality took a noticable nosedive. Mileage dropped considerably. So I put the stock one back in, and all was well. But otheres with the same engine and year say they have done it without problems. Go figure.
A year or two later I used a Hypertech programmer. Great improvement. But got some pinging when towing on a hot day. So I put the 180* thermostat back in, and added some Water Wetter. All pinging stopped. But did not notice an imcrease in power or better fuel mileage.
For your application, give it a try. But save the original one so you can put it back in if you want to. Be sure and drill a hole in the base plate so it will purge easier.

Message: .boB, allegedly the PCM is mapped to make maximum power (optimum fuel mixture and timing) at something like 182 degrees, that's according to a lot of guys who seem to know what they're talking about.

Message: Wayne, just dril a 1/8 or 3/16" hole in the base plate of the thermostat. It helps prevent air lock and speeds up the purgeing process. It's an old trick that's been around forever.
Prodak, that is allegedly true. I can only say two things with surety: 1. It didn't work with my stock truck. 2. I have seen no solid data to back this up.
That's why I said give it a try. If you're happy, great. But be prepared to go back to stock or reprogram the computer.

Message: .boB, I agree with you, it might make like 0.25 HP difference but certainly nothing you can feel. I've been using 180 degree stats in my vehicles for many years just because I think it's generally healthier for the engine in hotter climates but never anything to do with power.

Message: I do the same thing for the same reasons. My Mustang and Cobra both have a 180* stat. More power? No, I don't think so. They both have modern aftermarket intake manifolds that do a god job of seperating the coolant heat from intake charge.
