Message: Ok it has been brought to my attention that my plenum gasket might have gone out. How do I know if this is so. I read somewhere that I might be able to see oil when I look through my TB. Am I not supposed to be able to see any oil at all? Also what would be any indications that it has actually gone out?

Message: i think at that amount of miles you will have oil on the TB. if its apart clean the TB it will run smoother when you start it up when its cold.

Message: There should be NO oil inside the manifold. The gasket doesn't "go out", it will develope leaks as it ages due to the plenum pan being steel, and the manifold being cast aluminum(different heat expansion ratios). Symptoms will range from (like mine) crappy start-up(and slightly high idle) until warm to crappy running and loss of power(and slightly higher idle).
If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

Message: It's a good indication. Someone had posted a how-to for vaccuum checking the gasket, but I can't seem to find it now.

Message: There will most likely be some oil from the PCV valve letting some through. I changed mine because I saw some oil, then I noticed that there was some even after I changed it, and it was coming from where the hose for the PCV valve enters the intake. I have some poor vaccuum which I am trying to track down now.

Message: A slight film is usually normal. If you see runny oil, your gasket is leaking. Most of the time you will actually see a piece of gasket hanging out.
I think the correct way to test for this is to first put a vaccuum gauge on the dipstick tube. Then plug off the crankcase vents and watch for more than (I believe) 3 inches of vaccuum. Don't quote me on that though.
