Message: I'm pondering what mod to do next on my 97 4x4 318 Sport ClubCab...
Currently...
Cold Air Intake w/ K&N , Gibson Headers, MagnaFlow muffler, and I keep the plugs, wires, cap/rotor fairly new (it's a cheap thing to replace every couple years). Also replaced the valve cover gaskets as it was a source of oil leakage.
I'm waffling between getting either a new PCM if I can (dunno if there out there for the 97's or not still) or just getting a programmer (Hypertech 50002).
I have gotten a lot of ideas from just reading here..but..for the "next" thing... I've read someone put on new injectors and the engine was smoother...so.. looks like the next upgrade will be in the $250 - $400 range.
And I have no dyno available, so, it's just "it feels nice" type approach.
Thanks!
-Rah!

Message: injectors on ebay are fairly cheap.

Message: Toolfan & Pokey: I believe that mod exceeds my knowledge level and comfort level...unless you know someone who will spend a Saturday doing that work for a pizza and some beers.
daveshotdako: Can't really live without a throttle body to send it out for boring -- don't think the truck would run and I don't feel like walking to work...thanks for the offer though!
thefastman.com sells the 50mm for the 318 at $250 + $80 core... I'll have to read up more on the benefits of the Tb's.

Message: Rah,
The Harland Sharp non-adjustable 1.7 Roller Rockers are as easy to install as a set of spark plugs, the hardest part of the install is removing the valve covers, something you've already done. It's something you are more than capable of doing.
They run about $320 from southeastrt.com. and will probably give you the most "bang for your bucks".
You could pick-up a used throttle body and intake from a junk yard and send those out to be modified, a little more costly then sending out your existing parts but, you can still use your truck while the parts are being modded and in transit.

Message: i know what you mean about not being without your truck while i do the work. i usually keep a v6 tb in stock so that i can bore it and send it and then whoever bought it just sends me back there original tb. if you would like get a used v8 tb for me to mod, that would be fine too. i am going to go to a junkyard soon and get one for a 5.2/5.9 and for a 4.7 so that i can do the same deal to them. again if you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me.

Message: Well after spending some quality time reading online about engines... I've decided to go for a 2-fer. Found a Throttle body already bored out to 50mm, and can still get new roller rockers (1.7's). Since I'm taking the covers off again anyways...I'm going to pick up a set of the Mopar Magnum valve covers just so it looks pretty too! This should all come in just over my $400 target! NICE!
Thanks for the advice! I'll have to followup in a few weeks to let you know how I like it!

Message: Ok so I did it... and some more, on accident.
Don't drop your pushrods under the intake manifold. Woopsie. That wasn't so bad, as the rear gasket was basically shot so got a set of new intake manifold gaskets installed and cleaned up all the gunk that was over the engine.
I went a bit over my initial plans of $400..but..ohwell.
New Harland Sharp 1.7 roller rockers, comp cams push roods, Found Magnum Valve Covers for $100 (ebay's my friend), and have a 50mm throttle body showing up this week.
So far..I notice that it accelerates much smoother and is noticeablly quicker when going from 55 up to 90mph. I'm kind of wondering what the difference will be next week when the throttle body bolts on.
But all in all..it's fun :) and I was able to notice the change - which was my goal.
I'm thinking getting new fuel injectors -- might be a good idea after having the stock ones off..and it's such an easy install for that.
