Message: well i findly got around to making a home made intake and im very pleased with the added preformance. all you need is 1 piece of pvc pipe 3in in diamiter 1in fitting to make it so the filter can fit at the end, and a extra hose clamp. $25 filter from auto zone or petboys. all this will sit you back $40-$50. one more thing you have to make a solid mount which is really easy. if you just want to put the filter at the end of the air hat you can easily do that.
the preformance is worth the money for the filter. my truck has more low end and alot more top end. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON A DROP IN FILTER!!

Message: Check out my homemade intake at:
www.dodgetruckworld.com/4x4dak
There's a description of how I made it on there, but basically what I used was 3" PVC pipe, a 45* bend, a 22.5* bend, a 3" Fernco fitting, a cone K&N air filter, and some heat resistant tape.

Message: thats cool, how much was the K&N filter? why did you use heat tape? what did you make your mount out of? did you notice a big difference in the way it preformed cause i can burnout through 1st and part of 2nd with the 318 auto cc. when i use to just chirp the tires of the line.
ps on my truck there was a rubber flap to stop water form getting in to the engine when it rains and i removed that flap and that let more cool air into the engine bay.

Message: The K&N Filter was about $55 but I figure it was worth the performance. As for a power difference, I could tell a pickup in low end. I still can't chirp my tires (I have an auto, though) off the line. I didn't have to make a mount for the intake. It wedged nicely between the cruise control box and a part of the air conditioning system. I also removed that rubber flap, so where my filter is sitting, it gets air from that hole and the hole that the stock airbox used to get air from. The heat tape was more or less a precautionary measure to make sure that the PVC didn't melt and that I was truly going to get cooler air thru the intake.

Message: Toolfan, you jury-rig some sewer pipe, install a cheap no-name filter on it and then declare "DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON A DROP IN FILTER!!" What is this based on, your butt dyno?
You also seem to be claiming that you can merely clamp one of these no-name filters directly on the airhat. Is that correct?
I must say this is all incredible and personally, quite unbelievable.

Message: N56629, do I sense a bit of negativity???
There are some people out there that can improve thier trucks performance without dropping in a $300 CAI,,, believe it or not...
He didn't invent the wheel or sliced bread, he just put an less restrictive air filter on the truck,,, what's so "unbelievable"?
toolfan, didn't you mention something about having your butt-dyno calibrated recently?

Message: How do you know that that the filter is "less restrictive?" Is this just another case of - if it's not factory it must be better? Do you agree that any old no-name filter from AutoZone or PepBoys must be better just because it has a shape similar to a K&N? Unless you buy a K&N, and the right size to boot, you are likely installing a more restrictive filter.
Many of the generic cone shaped filters that you find in these stores are designed for the four banger ricers. Is this what you are advocating or supporting?
I would be the last person to suggest someone shouldn't experiment on their own but to declare that his intake is better than any drop in filter is total nonsense at worse and questionable at best.

Message: Dang it,,, there goes that negativity again... Kind of funny to me...
"How do you know that that the filter is "less restrictive?""
Well I pose this question, how do you know that the filter is more restrictive? Toolfan didn't say he selected a 1 1/2" Civic filter, matter of fact he said the filter will fit over a 3" pipe. Still doesn't mean it will flow better than a stock 5.2 filter setup, but the the before and after affects speak loudly.
OEM style filter = truck can't get out of it's own way...
HomeBrew Filter = truck cant keep from barking the tires... maybe it's toolfan that can't keep from baking the tires with all this new found power, guess it doesn't matter either way.
Yeah yeah, this is being overly optimistic, just trying to balance the forces of good and evil here... LOL
Personally I think most of the "performance" stuff at AutoZone is a bunch of cheap crap, but then again I bought my $60 K&N at AutoZone.
I DECLARE that my 03's 4.7 CIA is better than any OEM style drop in filter for my truck. Now is that total nonsense or a questionable statement since you really know what I have?
I am also advocating cold air for the masses without ridicule from passer-byers who bash peoples attempts to maximize the potential of thier Dakota's with bolt-on modifications.

Message: I put a custom air intake on my Dakota too.
I had an Air Raid Warm air intake that was a total waste of 180 dollars, the thing still used the factory corrugated flex pipe which is horrible at flowing air. I never noticed any performance or MPG differences with that air raid intake.
Anyway, check page two of this site please...

You'll have to copy and paste the website, I don't know how to post links on this site.

Right on man. Some people got to really BUST someone's bubble for no reason.
I can see pointing out your OPINION like disagreeing with a HOOD SCOOP that doesn't really have a hole in it, etc which is DELIBERATE ricer mods to a truck/car.
But someone actually EXPERIMENTING with an intake tube and a filter in search of REAL performance gains is a practical thing to do.

Message: woooow, lets take it EASY. its just home made.
i just wanted to save a little bit of cash. the filter i got may not be better than a k&n but it saved me $30. so i could fill up my tank and have fun with the added preformance. i had a k&n drop in replacement filter that was $40 and it didn't do sh!t for anything. yeah and let me tell you about that butt DYNO its dead on accurate.
the heat tape makes sense but the piping i used was 1/2in think and its plumming pipe meant for hot water. it ain't going to melt. just make sure you keep filter oil on the filter or you will suck dirt. both my friends filterz sucked dirt and they were the k&n high flowing filter that sucks dirt. i would take my petboys $25 filter with b!tch chrome styling and perfect preformance to $ preformance. cant wait to get the fast button installed. IT SHOULD BE FAST!

Message: and now we have the douch bag of the year. waldo people are having a serious debate and then u go and say "I got me a K and N drop in filter and it added more power than a Paxton supercharger. It almost feels like a 408." Lets be serious a powerdyne supercharger has more power than your k&n drop in filter (and thats not much power) i dont think that it matters if you use a home made intake tube, made properly of course, or you go and by one, there will still be some added performance. i bought the k&n cone filter and it came with a polished aluminum tube all for 50 bucks.
I dont see why retards will post some of the most dumb a$$ comments go kill ur self waldo

dude your old air filter must have been a solid lump of mud if it made a difference like thatl
lol
if thats the case, i guess that i will replace my cai with a drop in k&n. oh yeah thats right, i took out the drop in k&n that i already had and noticed a big difference when i put on the cai.
