Message: I just wanted to come on here and say that our 2004 Dodge Dakota V6 has by far outdone herself... To the point where we have gone 4x4 the very first day we owned her as well as pulled our trailer up vertical hills, we have gotten into the most outrageous camp sites as well as out of some situations where anyother truck wouldhave been towed, she has definatlly proven herself over and over again( were still trying to see if she heats up at all) We have definatlly at times wondered if a V6 can do all this why would we go to a V8, just for the extra power.
By far this is the best truck we have ever owned ( after previosly owning two chevy truck and going through 3 motors with them) this truck has blown our minds.
I would recomend anybody who is looking to buy a truck that they get a dakota, though we suggest the power everything version ( we didn't opt for that so we still have to roll down the windows ourself lol)
But if anyone is wondering how the dakota sizes up to the other trucks of simular critique I'd say dakota will blow your mind away cus we have put ours to the test over and over again and each time she surprizes us by going above and beyond our expectations.
This truck in our mind is just as good if not better then a V8.
Hope everyone else lovestheir truck as much as we do.
Thanks

Message: 2004 would be a 3.7 which I assume has more pep than a 3.9
The 3.7 version with good gearing and the slightly lighter truck with less options may be fairly peppy. But if you think it tows well, wait 'till you try a 4.7 V8 :)

Message: it's a 3.7 and Ya it tows great.... 2 dirtbikes 2 kayaks loaded up with firewood and camping supplies with a 18 foot trailer behind it... oh and then we 4x into our sights so ya its a GREAT truck. its only a 2 door though as well, Lots more that we have done to it, wish Ihad some picks to show, we alos went on a 2 week journey tothe organ cost towing our trailer the whole way up some amazing twisty turny hills that we were shocked to see that it made it we were in 1st gear going up some hills but the damn thing never got hot weird?
Na we love our truck and we'll stick with dodge for now on. also theres is 40,000km on it and its only 1 year old and ya we've driven it a lot but we have had so much fun too.

Message: Well I too own a 3.7 dakota. It's a Sport Plus with the tire and handling, 3.92s, sure grip differential, 4x4, and I love it. It doesn't tow exceptionally well, but it is still a hard-working truck. Gets good fuel econemy. And next to the 3.9, there's just no contest. The 3.7 is just so much faster out of the box.
Sometimes I still wish for the extra grunt of the V8, but ultimately I'm very satisfied with my 3.7.

Message: Damn. A 18 foot trailer sounds LONG!
Is it kind of light weight intended for the kayaks?
I usually tow my 12 foot trailer. But it's loaded like crazy, cramming 3 ATV's on it and one in the bed of the truck and all our gear. And one time I pulled the bro in laws 16 foot trailer. I think I had 4 ATV's on it and our camping gear.
With those two trailers I could still do at least 70, and usually 80 up them BIG graded going either to Flagstaff or to the Dunes near Yuma.
Then I car once, but kept it to 55 max due to the trailer being way under rated so I don't know what it could have dine if I pushed it but it pulled them hills at near 55 with the cruise control.
The one time I had to shift into 2nd, and even let off and hit 1st was the time I towed that twenty-something foot long OLD travel trailer of my friends from Payson to Scottsdale. It was made with real wood cabinets, etc and had it full of his storage. It was a behemoth!!!
But I got it down here ok.
I think the Dak's handle fairly well for their size. I'd expect them to be more "loose" feeling with some weight behind them, but they are pretty good. I've only driven my 4X4 QC so I don't know if it makes a diff vs. some RC or CC Dak's with less weight in front of the trailer but mine doesn't seem to get pushed around by the trailer too bad at all. Seems to do all that a 1/2 ton could.

Message: The regular cabs tow well also - 24 1/2' camper is heavier than my truck, still handles fine.
Lead, follow, or get out of the way
