Message: i know what kind of shifter you are talking about. my brother has 1970 cutlass supreme fast back that my dad and him spent 3 years rebuilding, and he has that kind of shifter. not sure what brand the shifter is or anything but it is bolted to a 700R4 tranny. not the fasting car by any means, but is fun to shift.

Message: yellowR/T, that's funny.
I had a 1984 Cutlass Supreme (why, because it was FREE and smooth to drive) and I dropped in a 350 and a 700 R4.
I had the B&M Ratchet Shifter.
While it was fun shifting up and down by clicking up or down, the one BAD thing about it is that you can not slam it from drive to 1st in one pull like a normal shifter.
You have to ratchet it one click, let off, then click again until it gets down to that gear.
Going from the OD position to 1st took 3 clicks down. Could not do it instantly, that is for sure.
I thought of putting a floor shifter in my Dakota. I'd loose part of my cup holders though :(

Message: I didn't say a charger with an auto isn't fun to drive- just mentioning that the movie gives the impression that the car is a manual- you can see Vin Diesel slam his foot down on the clutch (that doesn't exist). I'm not even trying to knock an auto- if you want to win that's probably what you run on the strip these days anyway.
I also didn't mean to imply that a fart can looses horsepower, although I have my doubts as to how much it gains with modern electronic controls. The point being that most of the cars on the road taht are truly fast aren't all that impressively loud. I would generally not recommend racing a civic with a hushed exhaust note. Good indicator of a turbo. Ignition timing does not have a whole lot to do with how much of the combustion is wasted, but valve timing is crucial.
I can quote from a quote that I found in Hot Rod magazine a while back: "Loud engines are inefficeint" maintains Kevin McClelland at Flowmaster"it means the burn is happening during the time the exhaust valve is still open. You want low exhaust temperatures and low brake specific fule consumption- that means all the work is happening in the combustion space not in the edhaust".
That is what my quote was supposed to mean in a nutshell. Most ricers are a bunch of dumb kids with too much money and have probably never spun a single wrench in their lifetime. Most of the people I knew that drove those cars spent most of their time waiting around for someone to work on their cars for them.

Message: yeah i hate these half ass ricer's with there loud and annoying sounding P.O.S. CRX's and Tiburon's and stuff. but the thing is that i am part Japanees and with being part Japanees i guess it just comes out natrually and i dont even know it. i really love the really tricked out with performance parts WRX STI and Lancer Evo VIII that are able to put out 500 HP at the wheels, with decals on the left side that look the right way when you read them but on the right side they are completely backwards. Those are the only tuners that i really like, like the ones you see in Super Street. that is how i wanna get my RT. stay american with the V8 360 magnum motor and still have the style with bodykits and rims and stuff. so i have mixed oppinions with these rice burners.

Message: GraphiteDak,
i know excatly what you are talking about. I looked when i got home and he has the exact same shifter. my brothers has a 350 in his bored 30 over, not much of a speed demon, mainly for cruisin. he said he has to wait until he gets out of college before he can make it fast!!

Message: Cool. Mine ran pretty good for what it was. I tricked out the tranny a bit and it barked the tires really good during shifts :)
Not too mention a STOCK 700R4 (unless it's from a Vette or something) will upshift into 2nd too early even if you hold it in 1st! Is that crazy or what???
But I installed a shift kit, ground the weights on the governor, etc to get it to shift later and shift hard.
The 350 had some miles on it but i threw a new top end on it. Closed Chamber Heads, Big Cam, Intake, 650 Dbl Pumper. it ran 6k easily and was pretty fast for that weight :)
