Subject: Check engine light! IP: Logged
Message: Hey everyone. So I'm driving down the road listening to the woman yap about something that I wasn't paying attention to and there it is....... The light that can stop a grown man's heart. The crushing "Check Engine" light. After calling around and getting prices to have my codes read, I finally discovered that our Air Force base has a code reader for only $25 a pop! Yet ANOTHER benefit of my 7+ years so far of being military. After the 5 minute analysis, it turns out that my gas cap has gone bad and is not keeping constant pressure inside the gas chamber. So just let it be known that our gas caps can be failing and causing a check engine light. The good news is that gas caps cost very little and you can reset the check engine light yourself. Just disconnect the battery, tap the brake a few times, re-connect your battery, and wallah!! No check engine light!! Gravy.

Message: if you would of taken it to auto zone they would of read the code for you for free. also I know on my 03 you can do a trick with the ignition and it would give yo uthe codes. so I think yo ucould of saved $25 bucks and just buy a cap.

Message: if you turn the key on and off three times (do not start the motor) and on the third time the odometer should display the code. this should work on a 98+. then all you have to do is figure out what the code means.

Message: Yup, the answer was here free - all this info is in the archives for anyone to do a search. Glad you got the problem solved; hoped you checked to see the gas cap was tight before replacing it. This is a common problem on all vehicles; not just our gas caps...

Message: Yep, seen it happen a bunch. Hondas seem especially suceptable to failure of the gas cap as well. We have countless customers that have called over the years about a check engine light but no symptoms. Our first question is always "is the gas cap tight?". Frequently the gas cap doesn't even fail- espcially the older ladies seem suceptable to not tightening the cap all the way! Glad there was no serious issue with your truck anyway, as I'm sure you are too!
