Message: My guess is that the programmers, SC/Hypertech, rewrite the tables in the PCM for both open and closed loop modes. The PCM would use the new values in the rewritten tables to make adjustments. i.e. stock table says 'x' amount of advance for 'abc' conditions, rewritten table says 'y' amount of advance for 'abc' conditions

Message: When I lived in Payson (5,000 ft and above) we advanced our timing to the max to get any power we could up there.
When we would drive to Phoenix we'd get pinging on occasion and pop the hood and bump the timing back a tad.
That was on distributor type engines with carbs of course :)
I never heard of the 1 degree per 1,000 ft before, but it could be fairly accurate.

Message: Mostly we used a vavumn guage to set timing > advancing till it went backwards a bit then backin off to highest reading and as a rule backing off one more point > if at this point we could stop the engine and floring it at same time then restart with no kickback it stayed there > on the higher compresion engins of the time this worked put to 5 degrees at our 5000 feet elivation > smaler lower compression engins could handle a bit more > I run fords at the time and as i moved up to newer cars i moved my engine to that car > i had a rare 390 --- 385 HP that came factory equiped with 3 duces and a very large breather on top covered with a full sized thunderrbird > light blue or what ever This engine was a 4 bolt main bearing and 1962 model year

Message: I ran 89 octane in tow mode pullling 5200lbs and had no pinging at all. Maybe it depends on what mods you have.

Message: Yup, depends on mods, altitude, grade, gearing, tire size...many things.
Lead, follow, or get out of the way
