Subject: check engine light........idiot machanic IP: Logged
Message: Alright, my check engine light comes on, i took it to a local parts house to have them see what it was(their computer test was free, just a little handheld comp). The code read "p0420 catalyst efficiency low (bank 1)." They were not sure what it meant. It was a toss up between an O2 sensor and catyletic converter. Just to be sure what it was i took it to a tune-a-car place to have the machanic put it on a diagnostic computer. THEN I MET THE KNOWER OF ALL R/T's!!!
He did say it was the catyletic converter, which i think is true, but not 100% sure. He then told me that he once had an R/T. So, i told him i was planning on putting headers, supercahrger, and a msd 6al w/rev limiter on it pretty soon.
He said "NO" on the supercharger because those motors where not made for that, to high of a ratio. It blew the seals on his motor all the time, he said. "No" on the headers because the motor had to have more than 1# of pressure coming out and that headers would not make enough pressure."No" on the msd because they just dont work on that motor.
Is this guy an idiot or is he right and I cant do anything to my R/T?

Message: He is an idiot. If he was blowing head gaskets under boost then he did not have it tuned properly and was getting some detonation. That will do it every time. There is a ton of stuff you can do to these engines. Headers, M1, rockers, cam, exhaust, UD pulleys, s/c, nitrous, heads, TB, electric fan conversion, tranny kit, gears.

Message: The last two weeks on the show called trucks, they were working on a project called Rolling Thunder. They put a SC on a Dakota R/T. The point is just do it right. What does he mean by those engines? Sneezer is on the money here.

The 5.9 is not exactly a WEAK motor. I'm sure stronger head gaskets are available as well.
Slap a SuperCharger on that biatch and show him what's up!

Most likely it's a failed or lazy O2 sensor downstream from the catcon, and the catcon is fine. The downstream O2 sensor is expected to show a leaner exhaust than upstream, and if it doesn't, the computer decides the catcon isn't working well. But it can also be the downstream O2 sensor failed, which usually produces no change in performance.
