Subject: TPS help pleeease!!

Message:
I have read lots of past posts on this forum. I think I have narrowed my problem with power issues to the "throttle position sensor". Anyhow I checked the input voltaget to sensor and is reads about 5 volts. The ouput voltage at idle is .6-.7. When I give it steady full throttle is goes to about 1.2 volts. When I give it full throttle in bursts. (i.e. no throttle to full throttle for less than a second then quickly let off the gas) it goes up to 3 volts.
Is this correct...or should constant full throttle keep at higher voltage. I have installed a new TPS sensor with the same results.

Please any experience with this would be very helpfull.

does it return to the .6-.7 @ idle? if so i don't think you've found your problem. what exactly is the truck doing?

Yes it does return back to .6-.7 volts. Basically the truck occasionally acts as if it is running on 4 cylinders, but then surges and throws me back in my seat. Honestly I would prefer if it would constantly throw me back in my seat. It seemed to accelerate faster than it ever had before. I have replaced the oxygen sensors, cat. converter, IAC, IAT, with no avail. I am going to be towing some waverunners in a few weeks and would like the truck to be at full power, and running right.
The truck seems to have the problem when it is warmed up and I am accelarting. Over all the power goes way down when the truck is just below 210 on my temp guage (center) I have had a 180t-stat installed already.

when you checked, did the tps voltage jump all over the place as you moved the throttle, or was it a steady increase until WOT?
have you tuned it recently?
also, you may want to check the MAP sensor.

WOT should be about 3.5 to 3.8 volts. If it doesn't reach that, replace the TPS.

You don't have to have the engine running to read the voltage. Just turn the key on, read the voltage with the throttle closed and then again at WOT.

It doesn't matter which engine you have. The voltages are the same for all magnum engines.

Daddio: The voltage read out was did not go above 1.5 volts unless I ramped on the throttle (in quick bursts). If I gave it steady throttle up to WOT it wouldn't adjust.

B. Lincoln: I went through 3 TPS sensor's from autozone the other day..all with the same results. I used their Well's p/n TPS333. This part is about $40. Dodge TPS is $90. Should I go with that?

N56629: Shoot. I wish I knew that I didn't need the motor running to check this. I had it off at first before giving it WOT. Now that I have made my neighbors suffer the sounds of my motor at WOT in the driveway through the 40 series flowmaster, I have checked it with the motor off. It reads .6-.9 at idle position, and 3.8 - 3.9 at WOT. It climbs steadily.

In regards to the MAP sensor...how do I check this...is it as easy as the TPS? I have read that it typically goes out..not bad. Also that if I had a problem with it, it would be continuous, not intermitten. Although I do feel that the trucks power issue is continuous, it's worse when at operating temp to 210 degress.

Forgot...for tune up, I had replaced the plugs with the 3923's about 1000 miles ago. It doesn't ping anymore thankfully. The cap, rotor, and wires I replaced 10,000 miles ago.

There doesn't appear to be anything wrong with your TPS. Check for vacuum leaks.

I will check for vacuum leaks tonight. I ran a search on the internet for how to check the MAP. Followed the guidelines and everything seems to be fine with it. With engine off, key I am getting 4.9 volts to the electrical connection. With the engine at idle I am getting 1.3 volts. When I start to give it gas, the voltage steadily climbs up to 4.8 volts at WOT.
So the MAP is working properly. I don't see too many vacuum lines. I am basically just looking at the MAP and follow those vacuum line(s) back to where they start from...is there any others that I should be looking for/at?

My truck seems to not have much bottom end grunt as it should. It pulls hard at about 2500 rpm. But hell it is a truck with a v8... the torque band should be lower for towing and hill climbing.

I have one question for you. When you are going highway speed, do you feel the torque converter lock/unlock/lock/unlock etc? My R/T did that and it was the TPS that did it. When I took it off, I noticed that there was a crack in it. The dealer said all the readings were good. Readings don't mean everything. Take it off and look at it yourself. A new one at Advance Auto is $26.00.

Jessica, when you get to do the clutch, take a look at some double plates tipe.
I drove one 4.7 like mine and it is very noticiable at take off.
I can`t wait for mine to go bad.
