Subject: New Tires? IP: Logged
Message: Ok,I have a 99' 4WD Dakota, I haven't had it long. But I don't drive too much off road. I like the way off road tires look, but I'm not sure how they are on gas mileage. Since I don't drive off road but like 20% of the time, should I just get All Terrains, or would it not make such a difference on gas mileage if I get Mud Terrains? I have Goodyear Wrangler RT/S on there now, and I get the average 15-18 mpg. Just wondering if anyone can give me some advice...THANKS!!!

Message: Ken, in my opinion, if you stick with the same size tire, you won't notice a large difference in mpg if any... however, if you only go offroad 20% as you said, I would stick with the A/T tires as the M/T's will burn off the lugs a lot faster running them on the blacktop all the time. I usually run Liberator's on my trucks (sold only at Wal-Mart). Their a fairly cheap, aggressive for an A/T tire, and I average about 45-50,000 miles out of them. I run those on my trucks and also on my wife's Jeep Cherokee. (31x10.50's on the trucks, and 245/15's on the jeep.)

Message: Hi Squad 51,
Ok, I've heard of Liberators b/f, but I didn't really see them anywhere, so I didn't try and look them up. What are their ratings(if you know). Do they wear well? How many miles Have you gotten out of them? And how much are they(about)...Thanks

Message: IMO, the Michelin LTX M/S is just about the best all around tire you can get. It provides great traction in snow and mud, good for general off road use, has a LT rating, is very smooth and comfortable on the road. I've got about 35,000 miles on mine, and there's still plenty of tread left. I expect to get another 35,000 out of them, maybe more.
I mostly use my truck for street and highway. Some towing/hauling. Some off road. We get a fair amount of snow and ice each winter, especially in the mountains. Last fall I drove from Ogden, UT to CS, CO in one heck of a blizzard. Traction was never an issue. Last spring I towed a trailer from MA to CO without any tire problems at all; and it was pretty dang hot across the mid west.
The only downside is that they are a little expensive. I paid about $600 for a set of 4, including full replacement warrenty, mounting, balancing, taxes, disposal fee, etc. But if they last 70-80K miles, the price startes to look a lot better.

Message: I run the Michelins mentioned above over here in Germany, & these tires rock. The gas mileage improved a bit. I now average about 150 miles out of a 1\4 tank of gas, compared to 110-125 before (thats cruising at about 95+mph), and the handling was definitely improved over the stock GoodYears. I would give you some mileage numbers, but they sale the gas over here in liters. They are a 200% improvement over what you're running now.

Message: While you are at WalMart look at the BF Goodrich Land Terrain tires.
These are made for WalMart only, and WalMart carrys the warrentee on them.
I have them on my '01 QuadCab 4X4 and they work good on and off road.
Under a $100 bucks and a 50,000 mile warrentee.

Message: Ok, This might be a stupid question, but I'm not too familiar w/ tire sizes. What is the difference b/t:
215/75-15, 235/75-15 & 31X10.5-15???
I have 31X10.5-15 on my Dakota now. I just don't know the difference b/t them.

Message: Ken
Go to this link and enter the tire size and it will show you the difference.
http://www.dakota-truck.net/TIRECALC/tirecalc.html
215/75-15 equals 28 X 8.46 x 15
235/75-15 equals 29 x 9.25 x 15
31 X 10.5 - 15 equals 267/75-15
Hope this helps

Message: Ken, I usually get about 45-50,000 miles out of the Liberator. They only come with a 40k warranty. Also, in my neck of the woods (West Virginia near Pittsburgh PA) they run about $74 a piece. Haven't looked into the BF L/T's mentioned above, but I may have too :o)
