Subject: SuperChips + Rain = Scary! IP: Logged
Message: Just got done going to the video store.
It is raining out.
Normally I slip with ease but now have to ease the throttle very slowly in 2WD to get going at all without just sit-and-spin since it's very responsive from a dead stop.
Anyway. I wanted to see what my 5-45RFE would shift like in the rain with the SuperChips programming. It occasionally chirps the tires on the dry as it is now.
I eased it up to 30MPH holding it manually in 1st then gave it more gas and shifted into 2nd at 45 or so and it shifted so damn hard the truck went VERY sideways (even with an open diff) and I had to let all the way off the gas and correct my steering! It actually went out of control for a second so bad that I would not do it again with the traffic I had around me! I knew it would slip on a shift, but didn't know I'd go at least a foot sideways!
Then I tried it from a dead stop in 4HI, It actually slips a bit as I take off hard to where I have to steer the truck straight slightly then when it shifts it actually slips a bit. Holy sh*t this thing shifts HARD with the SuperChips performance programming!
Anyone who wants to make their 5 speed AUTO shift hard, should get a SuperChips programmer! But be carful in the rain!

Message: my 3.9 is wicked in the rain so i can imagine what anything with 8 cylinders would do, especially a 5 speed and superchips. i still wish i had a v8 though. my tires will spin anywhere in the rain but it sucks when it happens and i don't want it to. one time i know i would've caused a pile up had there been any traffic where i was. fortunatly they were all stopped at a red light way away from me. gotta love it when nobody's around and you wind it out going sideways down an empty stretch of road though. but yeah, if you don't expect it it can really screw you up.

Message: Ya, I've noticed 2005 fords and gm's, but not a 2004 dak...Go figure. This unit sounds like just the ticket for more power etc. I have a K&N filter set up and dual catback, but the superchips programmer would open these up for me. Soon I hope....

Message: LOL,
At least you can stick your's in 4-wheel drive!
Mine: '98' RC, 5.2, 5-speed, 3.92's.
On dry pavement with 275-60x15 Cooper Cobras, it will chirp the tires when you power shift into 5th. Don't even think about mashing the gas on wet pavement! When it does snow (once or twice a year) around here, the truck stays parked!
It had the Coopers on it when I bought it, so you can't blame me for these P'sOS. As soon as they wear out it's getting some Kuhmo's.
They'll only help when it's dry though.

Message: Yeah. Sliding around is FUN. I grew up in the mountains with plenty of snow and dirt roads pulling original Dukes of Hazard moves all of the time.
But down in the big city now it's a little crazy when you Dak goes sideways that bad and you have 20 other cars around you. The truck is so responsive from a dead stop that I litterally have to BARELY touch my throttle to move or just throw it in 4HI :)
But in 4HI I can get it to slip for a bit now. I don't think it was before. It was rock solid.

Message: Yup, nothing like taking a turn sideways in a pickup, gas pedal to the floor, and looking out the door glass. Lotta fun.
We used to play Dukes of Hazzard 10 years before the show existed.
I will say it was good training for driving 4x4's with Lockers in the back and LSD's in the front when you're on snow and ice.

Message: I only had the ONE experience going a little sideways since the superchips program. Not like I was turning the wheel to MAKE it go sidways!
I was going STRAIGHT and edging the throttle up SLOWLY until it got around 5KRPM's and the thing shifted so crisp it slid the ass end out. Kind of weird for a open diff. I'd expect it with a locked rear!
Most of my playing around was in the day was in the mountains. Nothing to hit except mountains or go off the edge and fall into a creek :p

Message: Sure, as Clint Eastwood said years ago, "A mans gotta know his limitations". But I suspect Graphite does, and my Dakota is one of the most predictable and controlable vehicles I have owned when the rear starts to step out a bit. Offroaders and those of us in the snow belt probably have a bit more experience at this than others.
Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Message: Yeah Kowalski know what you are saying. And not all of Arizona is HOT like it is down here in Phoenix. I lived int he mountains with snow from 1982 to 2001 :)
But my main point here was I've had the Dakota for 2 years now. It would BARELY slip during the shifts before. Now it shifts so damn hard it breaks the tires loose. Kind of cool actually. But you need to know how to control it. It was scary because I tried it the first time when there was more traffic around me than would have been proper for trying a stunt like that.

Message: yeah i live in the snow belt, used to live in scottsdale, been up here since 93, been drivin in mud, snow and on gravel since i was 13, im willing to admit its still scares me to dick around on gravel, and in traffic isn't an option, can u imagine what a 16 year old's insurance would be after totalling a vehicle in traffic and gettin a wrecless driving ticket? its already hard enough to pay for it!

Message: Yup. That's why it's better to go out by yourself away from traffic to horse around with the Dukes of Hazard driving.
When I lived in Payson, we had tons of forest roads to do that sheet on. Only thing to hurt was the dirt or soem Pine trees!

Message: Here's a question for the slightly more experienced Dakota folks. I have every typical bolt on mod except boost and ignition (50mm TB, 3.73's, e-fan, 1.7rr's, FIPK, JBA's, and full exhaust etc.) Would it be better to get a Superchips or Hypertech or call up anyone that does custom PCM programming? I do plan on boosting and ignition upgrade as well as a cam later on, but for now (12-18 months) am I ok, or should I upgrade the PCM?
