Subject: Fuel injectors? TPS? Please help. IP: Logged
Message: I have a 99 Dakota with the 5.2. Have been having some problems with power since I bought this truck used about 6 months ago. Anyhow just curious as to how do I know if my injectors are clogged or near clogged? I have already changed the plugs, cap, rotor, wires. The truck runs smooth, but lately I have been noticing it getting a bit rough at idle sometimes. The other day I was in second gear (manual) and it started bucking. I was only going about 10 mph. Then once it stopped the truck took off VERY fast...or at least compared to what it usually takes off at.

Message: A bad cat would make things worse the faster you go. Pretty much the same with clogged injectors. However, a poor spray pattern or leaky injectors will run like crap a low speeds but you may not notice leaky injectors at high speeds or WOT.
Also check for simple problems like water in your gas.

Message: Well the cat was replaced about 2 months ago. Both o2 sensors were replaced at the same time. How do I test the fuel injectors for leaks? I found it weird that after it was stumbling it took off like a bat out of hell. It has never gone that quick before. But now is back to its normal power/speed.

Message: i think if the injectors were leaking, if you shut it off and started it back up in a couple minutes it would run rich, black smoke. because the injectors would leak fuel into the cylinder after you shut it down. i'd run it down to about 1/4 tank and dump a bottle of Seafoam in the tank.

Message: Should I run it down to a 1/4 tank, dump the seafoam in there, then refil it, or let the motor run with 1/4 tank and seafoam for a while then refil it?
Not sure if I asked that clearly. 1/4 tank, add seafoam, then add gas to mix it up?
or 1/4 tank, add seafoam, then run it...not adding fuel to dilute it.

Message: 1/4 tank add seafoam and run it until you have to put gas in it. or go 3/8 tank, add seafoam and run until 1/8 tank. 1/8 tank is when my fuel lite comes on. should be good.

Message: There are no fault codes. I have no check engine light, key on key off etc.. shows no codes. Scanner from autozone shows nothing.
you sound like a stealership..."no check engine light...no problems here. By the way that engine scan will cost you $60, even though we found nothing wrong"
people who are afraid to post an actual user name / or code, typically have nothing important to say.
Thanks for all the real help to those who posted above. "broken record" your just a dumb a$$

Message: Do you know of a somewhat easy way to check the MAP Sensor? I really don't want to continue dumping money into new parts that aren't broken. I have checked the TPS. The IAC was replaced not long ago. Plugs, cap, rotor, and wires were replaced at the same time. I poured seafoam in the throttle body and gas tank...per the instructions on the can. The IAT is new. Both Oxygen Sensors were replaced less than 3 months ago.
No check engline lights or codes.

Message: Checking codes is free, either you do it or Autozone does it for free. You didn't respond to my first request; why the hostility to people who are trying to help you? Lighten up, or no one will want to help you. Codes are the first thing to check. Not always revealing, but should be the first step towards diagnosis.
MAP sensors usually cause constant trouble and don't heal themselves. They also ruin your gas mileage (even as bad as some of these trucks are). I'd look to an intermittent wiring connection at an O2 sensor.
BTW, I'm an engineer, not a dealership employee. Been working on cars for 27 years with great success, and inexpensively.

Message: Thanks for the info, but I actualy said that there are no check engine lights and no codes. I have already gone down to autozone and used their scanner, that is why I know there are no codes. I also mentioned above that the O2 sensors were already replaced, so those shouldn't be bad.
I am not trying to get angry at anyone, sorry that it sounded that way.

Message: have you checked fuel pressure? i think a Chilton's or FSM would help you diagnose the problem. they would probably also have the procedures to test the sensors. if i had a 99 FSM i'd get the info for you.

Message: I will check that out...a fuel pressure guage can't be too expensive. Maybe autozone has a rental. I will look through a Chiltons book today. I have only gone to those when I new what the problem was, and just needed to fix it. I have had many problems with my truck, and this site has always helped in the past diagnosing the common problems.

Message: Any other ideas out there? This issue is very annoying, especially since I know the truck should be putting out more power. If a dodge ram with the same motor and an automatic has more power than mine with a manual...something is not right. I have replaced the cat. converter about 4 months ago. Just switched to autolite 3923 the other night, with no resolution.
