Im having some serious issues in my 88 with a 360 race motor. Im not understanding whats causing this. THe pcv valve is in good order and it is opening when it should. I took her to the track and was doing alright considering i havent opened her up all the way. The first time i went WOT i immediately saw my oil psi drop drastically with a lot of clutch slippage. What on earth caused my rear main to blow with a fully functioning PCV?

If you are getting a lot of blowby past the rings, the PCV may not be able to keep up and the crankcase pressure builds up. You might want to do a compression and leak down tests. Maybe a breather in the valve cover would help?

i tried a leak down results were fine and a breather is installed. could the oil pump cause this considering i rev it up to just under 7000?

Going with what info you mentioned and baring a defective seal, yes the oil pump can cause this IF you have a high volumn pump and installed a stiffer relief spring in it > I made this mistake once on a chevy engine I installed in a 64 CJ5 > Faster I went the higher the oil presure was > Guage registered 100 and I could peg that easy

Before you jump on the pump with both feet, check the actual preasure with a mechanical guage > Know your right prior to tearing things apart

it runs 125 psi at 7000 rpm.... thats a little to high right? could it be cause by a clog? not real sure i normally just replace em on stock cars

Not sure what your doing at 7000 > I assume you built this engine up and as a rule this does include a high volumn pump > So again > Did yoU PUT A STIFFER SPRING IN IT > Your loi filter relief valve should open long before 125 unless your running a filter with no reliefe valve > your not going to get 125 pounds out of a stock pump > Don't worry to much about it anyway > at 7000 revs the engine won't live very long unless it is actualy built up to handle this on a regular basis

Its a race motor with a balanced crank. Yes it does have a high volume pump. Ok so the spring i installed in the oil pump is causing this? so what then replace it with a softer spring right?

Btw since it is for racing, i expect to have to rebuild it constantly.

There's your answer > Myself, I would use a new stock pump > If you do use the heavy duty it should have come with more then one spring > Use the lightest one it came with > Stock will give a good rebuilt engine 60 to 80 pounds of preasure > The heavey duty with light spring depends on manufacture but should still out perform stock > Where the heavey duty comes into it's own is being able to pump the oil needed into a race lose built engine > Your really not interested in pushing more preasure > You also must change the seal
