Subject: Poorly running 408?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have just instaled a 408 stroker into my 97 dakota with a 5spd. I am running the B+G cam calibration, KRC 530/502 214/224 cam with 1.6 ratio rockers, 24lb FMS injectors, with ported TB and heads, M1, headers etc. The truck starts fine and idles decent, a little rough but that is to be expected. THe problem is when acellerating it revs smooth untill about 3000-3200 rpm then it feels like its breaking up, and doesn't rev or pull like it should. THe more throttle you give it the worse it gets. I pulled the plugs and they are showing a very rich condition. Compression was between 180-190psi on all cylinders, and the coil is working properly. I reset the engine at TDC on #1, set the distributor drive gear to the proper alignment and adjusted the sync to +3-4, and TPS voltage is .66. I am wondering if the cam gear might be set to one of the +4 or -4 keyways. Would that cause a condition like this or does anyone have another idea? I am lost and disapointed.

e-mail KRC, maybe they know, or maybe you aren't getting enough fuel in it?

Did you flash the PCM? if not get it done. sounds like the memorized fuel curve in the pcm is pushing more fuel into the engine than is nescarry with the 24# injectors. Just remember that every internal mod on an engine, that is electronicaly controlled, you make, it always is a good idea to have the computer adjusted for it.

Btw u are running a higher octane fuel for that stroker right?

Well turns out that my friend lined the timing on the chain up wrong, he line the two large dots up instead of using the small dot on the MP chain, runs great now, just need to get it broken in before I hammer it. I am running 93 octane and have just a little pinging at about 1600 in 5th gear if I give it more then 3/4 throttle. thanks for the advice.

Sounds like u got a little too much endplay on ur piston pins. Good work on the correcting of a misaligned timing chain

Need to back off the ignition timing just a little. You could try dropping a couple steps cooler on the spark plugs first. That might be just enough to do the job.

pokey,
I have a 97 cc, and am waiting for this engine ( 160k) to give me trouble, so I can drop in a 408.

how much did the swap cost you? did you do all engine work yourself? did you replace the tranny too?
