Subject: Wheel Size vs. 0-60 and 1/4 Mile Times? IP: Logged
Message: I have a new 2005 Dakota ST CC 4.7l.
I Got the truck with the Basic Stock Rims to save Money because I was going to replace them anyway with a better Rim Style but I wanted to know what Changes will I see or notice going to a 17" or 18" Rim/Wheel instead of the stock 16" Rims?
I wasnt going to go with a Low Profile Tire because of some of the roads and trails around here and I also wasnt going to go with the HUGE Off Road Tire either but I did want to go with a Performance Tire for the New Wheels.
So what changes will I notice when uping the wheel size on the truck?
I know I'll have to get the Speedo adjusted and stuff.
But from reading, I'm not sure if I'll lose Speed or Gain Speed or get worse gas mileage or better mileage ect,..
AHHHHHH,.. I'm So Confused,...
Any help or suggestions would be most helpful.

Message: DakotaJimbo, I've done the swap that you mentioned. My '01 RC came with 265/55/16 Sport wheels, which are 29" diameter, and I also have a set of R/T 17x9's with Michelin LTX Pilot 255/55/17 tires at 28" diameter. My Dak has a 4.7 5-speed with 3:92LSD rear. The computer has been flashed by the dealer for the 28" tire, which worked out fine, since the change is in 1" diameter increments for the speedometer. Generally speaking, the smaller diameter tire lowered the gear ratio (closer to 4:00 to 1), which helped the acceleration and city MPG, while the highway MPG dropped slightly. I have air intake/HO cams/exhaust mods as well that aid the 19-20 MPG city/hwy my '01 gets consistently. By the way, the Michelins are awesome; 55K miles and still not to the wear bars yet!

So if I understand you correctly If i go to a 1" or 2" larger wheel I will lose take off acceleration?
Did the dealer Flash your computer for you after you put the new rims on?
How much was the reflash?
As soon as SuperChip Releases a version that works with the 2005 Dakota I'm going to be all over it but they dont so I cant get one yet.
Thank you.

Message: If you use the same tire diameter, the acceleration difference will be nill. The 17x9's are slightly heavier, so all things being equal, will be slightly slower because of more rotating mass to accelerate. Drag racers still prefer lightweight 15" wheels to have less weight to get rolling. If you want to absolutely kill acceleration, go with all-steel 20-24" wheels. Here's a simple comparison: take two bicycles with identical gross weight, but one has a heavier frame, one has lighter wheels. Time a rider over a given course on each bike, and the bike with lighter wheels will be faster every time. My computer was flashed while by my favorite dealer mechanic as a "freebie" when I had some other work done, but I think the shop minimum charge probably applies to something simple as a speedo flash. It was done after the R/T wheels were on; speedo is now "on the money", I might add.

Message: Yup,.. I think i understand.
I think the highest I'll go will be a 17" wheel.
I've never been a big fan of the 20"+ Sizes.
I've seen some funny looking Dakotas with HUGE Rims, Low Profile Tires and I'm sure they paid a lot too,.. But their Truck Looked Funny As Hell.
But at the same time some can look good lowered and big rims.
I think i'll look into a 17" and tiny bit smaller wall size tire then current stock for a bit of cornering performance.
It'll probably = out to what is on it now...
Maybe I should Look into some Performance Stickers. lol j/k
