Subject: Ready to buy and would like input IP: Logged
Message: Im getting ready to purchase a used Dakota as an eventual very cool project truck. I've found a 99 4X4 5.2L shortbed RC that Im really interested in. I have a couple questions though for those that would know:
1) Was there optional gears on them or do they all have the same (and what are they)? It has the towing package.
2) How strong are the axles/transfer case, etc. I know the trans (518 correct?) can take some abuse if built properly.
3) Is there any certain problems known for this particular year (besides ball joints)? Anthing else I should know.
I currently have a 77 Charger with a supercharged and intercooled 469" big block, and an 11 second SRT4 neon daily driver. Now its time for a new project vehicle. The plan as of now is for a big single turbo'd 360 or 408 with maybe a small shot too (now you know why I want to know how strong the axles, etc. are lol). I havent decided between a magnum or premagnum engine but thats a while from now, I've got to get the truck first. I need it as a winter daily driver, hence the 4X4 (plus traction). Any solid input would be greatly appreciated, or links to input/option decoding. Thanks for your time,
Justin

Message: I can help with your first question - 2 possible gears in 2 possible rears. Most came with 3.55 ratio, some got 3.92. Might say which on a tag or sticker on the rear, or in the glove box. The lighter duty rear is the 8 1/4, the heavier duty 9 1/4 can be identified by its octagonal shaped cover. Stock limited slip is an option that is known for some problems, you'd be better off with an Eaton or Auburn limited slip. Good luck with your project - sounds like fun !

Message: The 4X4's can have the 8 1/4 rear? I thought they all had the 9 1/4, oh well. What about the front axle? Thanks for your reply,
Justin

Message: Front axle is 8" corporate. I believe most v8 4x4 models got 9 1/4, but I'm not sure they all did. I've heard the all wheel drive models (where you can't switch into 2WD) get 8 1/4 since torque is always split between 2 axles.
