 Subject: Dak vs Taco

I have a stock 4.7 4x2 extra cab auto and someone at my school has a v6 taco prerunner 4x2 auto with intake and exhaust and he thinks he can beat me in a race. Should I race him and shut him up or is his truck faster than mine?

I know if he would never do that bc he would whine about his truck only being a v6 and of course I should win I have a 1.3L advantage and all that crap. I just dont want to lose a race to him because I cant let my v8 go down to a v6 or I will never hear the end of it. I just want to know whether or not I can beat him.

What year are your trucks??If his is one of the new ones??? Sorry man I love my dak but the new taco's are pretty quick. And if yours is new your too heavy..you may need some mods first. Good luck.

No his is the old 3.4, sorry I forgot they had redesigned them, I should have listed that. My truck is a 99. I knew if his truck was the 4.0 I would be toast.

Jason, if your truck is 99, them, the engine is 318 5.2 liters.
The Dakotas started using the 4.7 in 2000.
If you race him up hill, you get more chances, but i think you can win any way.

I have a 2004 Dakota 4.7L 4x4 Auto
AND
a 1998 Tacoma 3.4L 4x4 Auto.
I wouldn't want to call it, either.
Based on my experiences with both, I think the Tacoma would be a bit quicker off the line, but the Dakota's extra two cylinders would catch up in a short distance.
4x2 Tacoma doesn't have all that 4x4 running gear, so would be quicker still.
Also, what does "with intake and exhaust" mean? The only replacement for the stock 3.4L intake that I'm aware of is a TRD supercharger. That, and a tuned exhaust, is available from any Toyota parts department. That takes its HP real close to the 4.7's.

The Taco's torque would be lower. You haven't mentioned which gears you have, that could make a difference.

My truck is a 2000, sorry about that, I know I have the 4.7, and I was unsure of the year bc we bought it new so I forgot. I dont know what rearend gears I have. When I say his truck has intake and exhaust I mean his has a k*n style intake I guess and has a bolt on borla or magnaflow muffler, I forget which one. I know those s-runners are quick, but his came with huge tires bc it is a prerunner.

I would say that your dakota should stomp him, even with an automatic.
P.S. The 4.7 motor is Pretty Peppy, and loves mid / higher Rpms. (just not Too high, I'd say 5,000 should be high enough)
I have no problem racing Tacomas, maybe not the new X-Runners or S-Runners, but the rest behind it are no problem for my truck.

Now you should figure out which gears you have. What you know about his truck is only what he's told you; and you know nothing about your own. If I wnat to race someone I may tell them my truck is stock, and you wouldn't know otherwise looking at it. Sounds like he's only told you what you could visually confirm, maybe that's all he's got; maybe not. Its definitely not a problem running a 4.7 higher than 5000 rpm.
