From time to time I hear that certain Chevy or Ford rockers will fit the 5.2/5.9 engines. I know that some require modification for clearance, but that's ok. Does anyone know for sure which ones they are? What size stud do these engines use 3/8ths, 5/16ths?

I researched this pretty carefully a while back. You have two choices:

1. Use a rocker set specifically designed for the Magnum engine. I would use steel so they fit under the stock valve covers. That's a rather expensive package, but easy to find.

2. Use SBC rockers. Gives you a broader choice of rockers, especially if you want to use the new Crane rockers with a variable lift. But you need a conversion kit from Crane or Comp Cams..

Both packages cost about the same.

Ok, I did a little bit of research myself and Crane offers a set with the number 11746-16. This exact same number is used on some AMC, Ford and GM applications. Wouldn't other rockers work if they are for the same application?

As for David's question on why would I use Ford or Chevy rockers instead of Dodge, these are not Dodge, Ford or Chevy parts I'm talking about. These are aftermarket parts that are often packaged slightly differently for each brand and many of the components may be the same.

My idea is to be able to make an intelligent choice if I decide to purchase them off eBay. You may find a dozen each Ford and Chevy, but nothing for the Magnum engine. Now tell me, why I would want to pay $500-600 for "Dodge" parts when the exact same parts are being put on Fords and Chevys?

Here's what I'm looking at. You don't see prices like when they sell them for a Dodge.

I know I may have to buy changeover kit, but that would still be cheap.

Those won't work. The conversion kit converts the stock Magnum set up to a stud mount. Those rockers are a pedestal mount, which Ford started using in 86'ish for their Windsor engines.

Stock engines use 5/16" studs. Usually, when using the aftermarket swap with so-called "Chevy" parts, they 3/8" studs are used. This Ford deal looks interesting. Can't say for sure it'd just bolt on. I did some comparing a while back on the stock 302 Ford rocker setup and the 360 Magnum, and aside from some very minor differences, they look like they came from the same molds and would interchange, but have not tried a swap.

gen1dak, that's what I don't get. One time I hear pedestal mounts, then 5/16 studs and then 3/8 studs. I can't seem to figure out which is which. Here's the specs on the Crane Energizer Rocker 11746-16

Chrysler-Dodge-Plymouth 92-00, "Magnum" 318 (5.2L), 360 (5.9L)
Stock ratio. Must use Crane's stud conversion kit with guideplates (36655-16), and pushrods (36668-16), to convert from the stock pedestal rocker arm to this adjustable stud mount design. (Optional heat treated pushrods available, Part No. 36621-16.) Stock valve covers must be modified or spaced upward approximately3/8" to avoid interference.
RATIO: 1.6 STUD DIAMETER: 3/8"

Now check out what is says for other engines that use the same part number.

Ok, the whole pedestal thing refers to the stock setup. The pedestals are held in place by the 5/16" bolts. The stock rockers "rock" against the pedestal. By converting to rollers, you are removing the pedestal entirely (it's just a piece of metal that fits into the rocker), and replacing it with a roller segment (which is built into the new rocker). So, with the aftermarket units, you no longer have a pedestal, so it's just a stud-mounted roller. The stud is still needed, be it in a pedestal mount, or a roller setup. Point being, you can't use the stock bolts that hold the pedestal when moving to rollers. They just thread into the head to hold the whole rocker assembly in place. The aftermarket studs are fully threaded as you can see. One side of the threads is for the head, the other is for the adjusting lock-nut. The adjustable aftermarket setup allows for locking it down just right....no slop. Often, the upgrade to a 3/8" bolt is mentioned from a longevity point-of-view, so it won't strip out of the head, but if you're using stock ratios, or just moving up to 1.7's on a stock cam, I don't see a problem. The stock setup handles larger cam lifts (and associated stresses) without a problem. So, if the kit you're looking at requires drilling out the heads for 3/8" studs, you'll have to do this to use the included studs, or you can try to get a deal on some stock-sized units.

The ones you are looking at are definately 36 series (Ford) Cranes, but I can't tell by looking at them exactly what part number they are. I suggest you ask the seller. The buyer seems to think they are pedestal mount, but the buyer doesn't come right out and say either way.

Unlike the Energizer series, the Gold series doesn't have a part number that matches both dodge and ford. Actually, it matches on Chevy. It is all a bit confusing. I've looked into this before.

The pedestal bolt on a magnum is 5/16, the roller rocker needs a 3/8 stud. I have Crower 1.7's, the studs that came with them are 5/16 on the head end and 3/8 on the rocker end. Or drill and tap the heads for 3/8 studs.
