Subject: Where to put the wing? IP: Logged
Message: I just ordered my JSP MACH III™ GRAND TOURING WING today and wondering where to put it.
I will get the most downdraft at the very rear of the truck right? I was thinking on top of the tailgate, but I would have to be careful when i open it. It would be worth the trouble though, because I would be putting alot more horsepower to the ground. I'll probably get a tonneau cover later, but I think this is probably the best mod per dollar around. Where is everyone else putting their wings? I've got a 97 V6 with open headers. Thanks for the input.

Remember:
Yellow stickers=50 h.p.
Winshield Banners=70 h.p.
Ground F/X, rims, and wings=too much power for me to handle.
So, if this is true than my does my stock("all motor" for you ricers out there) v6 run civics all day by atleast 2 seconds?

Message: Jeffster, like Ried said, you just dont know whats kewl. Get with the times jack. And dakman, its not gonna look like a rice burner fool, its a truck. Their wings do nothing because they are front wheel drive, but mine is rear, which will put an easy 30-50 more hp to the ground once I get that thing attached to my tailgate. I was thinking about that Todd...would be a cheap way to get rid of the tire rolling I get with those highspeed turns. Wings are the future of all motorsports.

Thanks Reid...at least somebody knows a great mod when they see one. And no, the wing is not for style (although it should be, its fat), its all about performance and more power. Also, Stickers DO NOT add horsepower. I have 4 stickers and have not noticed much of a difference. The open headers added a bunch tho! Sounds SWEET too! Really brings out that V6! Speaking of stickers, I've seen some that say CarWorks. Anyone know where i could get one that says TruckWorks? I already have one that says SuspensionWorks, would go good with that one.
Thanks in advance

Message: Somebody mentioned that the rear spoiler will not help you and I have to agree with them. The spoiler is a waste of money from a performance stand point. 1) The air toward the rear of your truck to too turbulent to be of any use with the spoiler you showed. 2) The drag both induced and parasitic is going to kill your performance. 3)You engine shuts down before you will ever be going fast enough to generate enough down force with that air foil to be of any help. 4) Your suspension will break lose in a turn at the speeds that you would need to generate to create enough down force to help. 5) It is going to be difficult to mount that spoiler in a sturdy fashion to your tailgate and have it look nice as well. Look at the plain steel spoilers that Nascar uses on both the cars and trucks and now look at yours. If you have tractions problems consider locking diff., better tires., suspension mods......

Message: I saw a Dakota today when I was out testing my new Accel coil on the backroads; it was a quad cab with a fiberglass tonneau that appeared to have a spoiler molded into it. The rear of the cover simply sloped upward, higher in the middle than the edges, and it looked just ... cool. And functional. I dunno how the aerodynamics of our trucks work. You know, the Charger Daytona's were tested in Lockheed wind tunnels (scaled down clay models) with little streamers attached to the bodies via tape. Anyone wanna do that and have someone in a taller truck follow them around with a video camera at various speeds? I'm sorely tempted myself... BTW - Lockheed engineered and built the fastest plane on earth, the SR-71 that breaks 3 times the speed of sound routinely and easily.
The Charger Daytona's had either a backwards or upside-down airfoil in their spoilers. The higher up from the trunklid they put it, the less it improved their downforce (so air must speed up along the countours of the vehicle). If I recall, they chose a happy medium to make it attractive ("winged car!") and improve rear-end stability. I used to have this nerf boomerang when I was a kid; had an airfoil on three "wings". It flew cool when right-side up, but twirl it backwards or upside-down and it leapt to the ground. An airfoil, btw, has a flat bottom surface with a rounded leading edge tapering down to a pointed trailing edge along the top of the wing; the air (to maintain air pressure and avoid vacuum) must travel more quickly along the top, sloped portion than the bottom flat surface, creating slower moving air beneath and faster moving air above, which generates lift because the faster the air, the less pressure. The 'flat' wings like in Larry's pic have to employ this to accomplish anything; upwards lips on the back of cars employ angle of attack instead, much like a fan blade (also affective, but less aerodynamic). The tonneau I saw used this principle.
My father has a '69 Charger and I bought him a book on Daytonas and Roadrunners and read half of it before I wrapped it last Christmas. :-) And the rest I remember from 5th grade science class back in .. middle 80's? But my two cents worth that I hope helps someone.

why don't you get a BackDraft rear spoiler from JC Whitney? in my opinion it looks better than a wing. i was considering on getting a wing but it might fall when going up in speed. you know what i mean? just my 2 cents.

Message: How fast would I have to get my truck going in order to gain lift from the wing. They had a car that drove on land and water why not a truck that can get lift off?? Perhaps if I redirected the wing and mounted it on the front it would lift the front end up. I could then drive on just the rear wheels only for maximum gains

Message: Oh, yeah! Those things ... they create a coefficient of drag that maintains a "wormhole" of sorts through the atmosphere eliminating turbulence and therefore friction so as to allow nearly perpetual motion with an automatic gain of 50-150 horses at 60 mph and upwards of 300 at 100 mph - in top gear where you need it! They essentially take the aerodynamic turbulence of the vehicle and hide it from the surrounding air so that even a brick on wheels can rival a Ferrari's atmospheric profile. Virtually imperceivable variations in the thickness of the wing produce a votrex type effect, essentially harnessing a power such as from a tornado to propel the attached vehicle forward until the nose dives moderately under braking, at which point the tail's vortex reverses due to angle of attack to act as a parachute. They produce a similar effect to laser and radar so that this power can be on tap and used even when driving by police stations, "pigs" in the median, etc, and the sonic waves that such an instrument generates over 15.7 mph* will actually soften wrinkles and stimulate hair and genitalial growth.
And they can be constructed with only $10 in card stock and some spray paint (optional, but less likely to sag when wet). I learned how in 5th grade science class as well - should have seen my '81 Omni with 63 horsepower (or 363 at 100 mph) go... -tk
* Speed listing assumes a head or tail wind no greater than 5.2 mph unless vehicle is equipped with racing stripes, in which case all above horsepower figures double.
