Subject: 03 Rear Disc Brake SHOES groaning IP: Logged
Message: Disc brake "shoes"??? That's what I thought when I pulled apart the rear disc brakes on my 03 QC last night. My rear disc's have had an annoying groaning noise while backing up, done this ever since I got the truck 6 months ago. I finally got tired of the groaning and decided to put a set of Wagner ThermoQuiet pads on the back.
I couldn't beleive it when I pulled the rotor, low and behold there was a set of brake shoes in there. NOW I can see where all of the noise was coming from. The rotor is actually a rotor and drum,,, drotor? The drum section of the "drotor" was pretty rusty and had little wear. Gee,,, wonder where all of the noise was coming from? Looks like the shoes are only for the Ebrake since they only function from the cable, non-hydraulic. Sanded the rotor and drum surfaces, washed it down, replaced the pads and the noise is gone! Well at least until I dunk the rear brakes launching my boat this weekend.
I always thought the groaning noise from my 03 rear disc brakes sounded exactly like my ol'2000's rear drum brakes after they got wet, now I know why.
If your rear disc's are graoning, especially when backing, drive the truck 15-25 MPH and apply the emergency brake slowly. This should clean all of the rust and junk off the drum surface and keep the shoes and "drotor" from groaning. I bet if I had done this before ripping everything apart the noise would have stopped.

Message: I see you said you SANDED the rotor and drums and the noise was gone.
I too have an '03 and have had to touch the ROTOR's with the fine paper sand wheel on a air dremel on my rotors about every 6 months or so to keep the groan away. It can get LOUD on these trucks. Your sanding yours is probably what stopped your noise.
When them rotors get SMOOTH they get that high pitched noise when you back up. i hear different brand pads also help. But I've got lots of pad left.
What I do is jack the rear end up. Remove the caliper. While idling I put it in gear and let the rotor turn slowly. Then I go back and forth real quick like with the air dremel to make a "cross hatch" look on the rotors.
I used a sh*tty bit that time. A round paper wheel is the best.
After doing this the sound goes away for a while.

Message: All good temporary fixes. Get CRC Disc Brake Quiet P/N 05016. Follow instructions! It works! If emergency brakes squel or growl, pull roter and put a ribbon of CRC on the inside edge of the emergence brake shoes, out side only. Make sure it does not get on any moving parts or the lining. it will fix the problem longer than any other fix!
