Subject: engine swap 3.9-360 questions IP: Logged
Message: hello, I have a 93 dodge dakoat with the 3.9 in it and have been pretty darn happy, untill last month, it just seems like its about to poop out anytime now. i originally wanted to rebuild the 3.9 but the lack of power when pulling a trailer through the kentucky hills just hurts my pride, so i have opted for a v8 engine swap. we have a 76 360 block laying here in the barn and i was wondering if after i built this up, will it bolt onto my auto tranny that is already in my truck? I cant really remember which trans it is, but I do no the oil pan for it looks like a square with a corner chopped off. plus it has electronic overdrive, that may cause problems. next question, will heads off of a 2001 ram fit on this old block? if they will, here is the list of what i will need to build the engine, please tell me if this all seems to work together ok:
1976 360 block bore 30 over
2001 360 heads ported and exhaust polished
new valves and springs
roller rockers-comp energizers
kieth black 12:1 dome tops
mopar intake manif
4bbl holley
stock rods
stock cleaned up crank
stock oil pan
high vol oil pump
high vol water pump
double roller cam chain
mopar cam (which one?, truck will be used for daily driver towing and a mean street stomper)
msd 6al
stock distributer
msd coil and wires
higher stall torque converter-1500-1700
new stock type pushrods lifters bearings and gaskets
some custom header setup that i have no idea where it can be done in this small town

Message: not sure which rockers you are talking about but more than likely they wont fit those magnum heads.
some things to keep in mind
* LA 360 had different motor mounts
* 1500-1700 stall is stock
* mopar doesnt have a carbureted magnum intake
* daily towing and 12:1 compression dont mix
* stock LA lifters dont work with magnum heads
* stock pushrods wont be the correct length
you got everything picked out but the heart of the motor.. kinda doing it backwards.

Message: If your doing and engine build up you need to either stick with LA block parts or magnum parts. Also a 4BBL with 12:1 compression will not be a good daily driver or good for towing. Plus you will be getting like 4 miles a gallon.
Here is would Iwould recomend;
360 magnum out of a ram truck or van from 92-01
Magnum R/T heads
Stick with the stock cam and rockers if you want low end torque for towing
Mopar performance magnum stroker pistons 9:1 compression
4 inch stroker crank
Just a few parts there is a lot more you might want

Message: and if you were to bolt up that 360 to your 3.9 tranny one day when you hit the gas you tranny will drop out in pieces, well maybe not but it will still die VERY quicly when you add, with the buildup you listed, about 300+ hp and ALOT more torque than your 3.9 put out
and the 8.25 might now hold up so well, thats why 360s came with the 9.25

Message: The 8.25 has been used for over 30+ years, and is still going strong. It has been fitted behind 360's in vans and RamChargers, so it is a proven performer. Granted, the 9.25 is a great swap. It's even stronger. A limited slip diff would be a good idea. The tranny will bolt up, but as has been mentioned, it's not that stout in stock config. It can be rebuilt with all the good stuff, and it'll handle a 500hp engine, no sweat, but using the larger A518/46RH would be an easier deal. It's bigger, and better suited to your goals.
The Magnum heads will fit your LA block, but you will need to make a few other changes. You will need the rocker setup for Magnum heads. The LA shaft-style will not fit. You will need hollow pushrods so the rockers will get oil. Magnum heads do not oil like the LA's. You will need to have the oiling lifters as well (95% aftermarket lifters stock-style are oilers. The oilers have a hole in the pushrod cup. Non-oilers don't. It's easy to see). Manciniracing.com has these parts listed specifically for this swap, as does Mopar Performance.

Mopar Performance has two intakes to fit Magnum heads and run carbureters. One is a single-plane, the other is dual-plane. For towing/good street performance, get the dual-plane. Edelbrock also has a carb intake for Magnum heads now. It's the Performer RPM AirGap for Magnum.....an awesone intake.

The LA block does not have provisions to mount like the Magnum engines, so you'll need the bolt-in crossmember kit from the above mentioned engine-swaps website.
12:1 compression ratio. Fine if you have a nice supply of 105 octane racing gas. Otherwise, set up with 9:1. Crank in 34 degrees total ignition advance and be happy.
The OEM Magnum exhaust manifolds are dynamite for low and mid-range power.
With that hi-vol. oil pump, be sure to get the hardened oil pump drive as well. The stocker will fail under the added stress.

Cam? I like the Xtreme Energy line-up from CompCams. Something in the 254 range for towing, and good idle to 5500rpm power. Don't forget the valvesprings!!!

Message: as far as the engine i would use the 76 block get a 408 stroker kit run 9.5-10.5 compression, edelbrock heads and fuel injection kit from summit EDL-3526(fuel injection setup)EDL-60779(heads assembeld) the trans you are running now is a chrysler A500 basicly the A904 with overdrive the motor will bolt up but the trans wont last in a swap application it would me a good idea to get a TQ727 for the reliabilaty and durabilaty (they put the same trans behind the monster 426 hemi) but it is a suggestion only, it is almost the same thing i am running in my 84 D250 exept i have lower comp for the turbos
