I had my cooling system checked out this morning. The cooling system shows no external or internal signs of problems. There was no evidence of coolant contamination in the oil or under the cap. The (factory fill) coolant shows no signs of corrosion, nor is there any sediment suspended in the liquid. The analysis of the coolant shows it to be at the factory installed 50/50 mix. More than likely the thermostat is fine, as the only time there is a heating issue is when the engine is working a heavy load.

But, a quick check of the radiator cap uncovered the most likely culprit. The cap's rating is specified at 21#PSI. The cap only held 9#PSI.

The quick physics of cooling systems are this: the engine generates heat, the radiator bleeds it off, the thermostat regulates the hot/cool water flow. To increase cooling capacity you either, 1) increase the coolant volume, 2) increase the airflow, or 3) increase the coolant's operating pressure.

Accoding to my radiator guy, Dodge employs option 3 to extend the capacity of the cooling system. Hence, the 21# cap instead of the lower pressures I have been accustomed to seeing. Because of this condition he felt a system flush was not needed.

Well so far the fix has been really cheap. I replaced my radiator cap to the tune of $6.16.

I'll let you know how it goes this summer. If the truck needs a greater cooling solution I'll head for the 3-row radiator core to solve it. That will cost a lot more than $6.16 though...

Thanks to everybody that contributed the great advice and ideas. I'm glad I was able to find such a simple problem and fix.
