Message: I know the engine Cut off is 6000, and that it gets its power at 4800 Rpms, now, I have a 5-speed, and the other day I accidently took it a little past 5000 rpms,
as long as it is not an everyday basis, will that hurt my engine?
everyday I drive my dak, I probably give it half throttle, just because I am in a hurry,
and I take it to about 3500, then shift,
I don't WOT it everyday,
but, what would you all advise on shifting?
what is the redline on the 4.7?

Message: There is no real "redline" indicator on your tach because the engine rpm limiter takes care of that.
5000rpm shouldn't hurt it.
3000rpm = 50 revolutions per second.
5000rpm = 83 revolutions per second.
6000rpm = 100 revolutions per second.

Message: HP and torque curves cross about 3500 RPM. That's a good shift point.

Message: Depends on how many miles you wanna go w/ one gallon of gas, how quick you need to gain speed etc.
If you want to be economical, don`t go beyond 2000 rpm. The 4.7 is a torque oriented engine and you will find a good amount of power on the lower side of the tac.

Message: I have an '02 4.7L and it turns to 7,100 RPM before the rev limiter kicks in. When stuck in bumper to bumper traffic I will run it all the way to 7,100 RPMs in 1st and 2nd to keep from up shifting and down shifting a lot. I've been doing this Since I picked the truck up new Feb of '02. Engine isn't hurt yet. I shift it when I race at 5,500 RPMs, just as it starts dropping power band. The overhead cam design allows for many more RPMs than the old pushrod motors, so if you feel so inclined, Twist it Up.

that is just crazy,
from my experience, sports cars can only do that kind of stuff.

Message: My 2004 is rev-limited to 5800 rpm. For max acceleration, I shift at about 5200 rpm, as the power really drops off after that. According to the graph at wjjeeps.com, the motor is making 260ft-lb of torque by 1500 rpm - wow!

Message: Redline on my tach is 6000, so a bit over 5000 is definitely no big deal. 4.7s make good power up top; not just a low rpm torque motor. That may explain why some say they get better milage without OD - something I've always been skeptical of and never tried; but the slight milage increase I've recently seen going from 3.55 to 4.10 gears would seem to back that up.

Message: It don't turn 7,000 RPM's UNLESS you had serious work and PCM mods.
I know KRC publishes like 450 HP AT 6800 RPM's on a HIGHLY MODDED 4.7
Otherise, yours shuts off at about 6000 RPM's like mine and everyone else does.
BTW. I've ran up to my rev limiter many times. I'm not worried.
This engine has chain driven OHC and a fairly bulltproff bottom end from what it looks like. These engines even have bed plates, the main caps are all one piece vs. how old school 5.2/5.9 etc are.
Duner threw a rod on his 4.7
But his waste gate stuck on his turbo and he ran it VERY lean at over 20PSI boost under full throttle a few times before he realized why it sounded like loose change running inside his engine!!
He STILL made it home before it broke. Most engines would not have survived that far.

You have aftermarket valve springs in them heads?
Or are the STOCK ones actually NOT floating at them RPM's???

Message: Duner, I will not tell a Lie, I ran mid 15s at Bandemere 5800', From 15.45 to 15.7 :( . The times posted are from San Antonio Raceway 600' where I live now.
Thanks for the Kudos on it. How is your rebuild project coming along? I have this truck on the back burner till I get my '93 Stroker truck finished. Then me and my son are going to do a 5.9L HO Cummins Turbo Diesel in this one, and put the 4.7L in a 280Z or a 300Z. I will build it to a reliable 400 hp for the Z.
The '93 I'm building is an old 360ci 'A' Motor from a '75 Cordoba. I have the Eagle 4" 4340 Chromemoly Stroker Crank, Eagle 'ESP' H-Beams, JE 12.1 to 1 Flat tops 4.030 floater pins, JE File Fit Rings, Pro Race SFI Damper, Hughes Engines 1.6 Billet Shaft Roller Rockers, EdleBrock RPM Heads Stage III P&P 2.02/1.6125 w/58cc chambers, Comp Cams True Double Roller Timing Set, Comp Cams Extreme Energy Hi-Lift .564/.564 cam with 251 and 257 Duration @ .050, Mechanical MSD Distributor, MSD 6AL with a 2 Step Box, Mezier Electric Water Pump, Edelbrock RPM Air Gap Intake P&P and matched, Clevite '77' Bearings, Melling High Volume oil pump, Holley 850 Double Pumper reworked w/no power valves larger jets to compensate and choke flange removed, Hooker long tube headers, Milodon 8 qt oil pan and pick up, Local Built 727 TF Stage III w/manual Valve Body, Hughes Transmission 3,000 RPM Stall, Hughes Transmission SFI Flex Plate, Full Comp Engineering Ladder Bar w/the 9.25 Chrysler Corporate rear end and Coil Overs, 4.10 gears and the stock Trac Lok as long as it will hold up.
This is a recipe for fun I hope. Especially since I have lightened the truck to just at 3,000 lbs with the stock v-6 and 6 point bar.
Hope to hear about your new build soon.

Message: I was going to ask the same thing about "Rocky Mountain" and the altitude difference from here. Like Duner said, that would have been quick as hell if that was your time up there, at a mile high!
But STILL very nice to see what you have done with a 4.7
So out of YOUR mods, what is it that has allowed your truck to breath so well above 6k RPM's? I've wanted to move my rev limiter up, and ppl say I'm crazy. I guess the diff springs would not be needed unless you went with quite a bit more valve lift than the HO cams (which are close to stock I think).
Duner, Where you been? Don't see you here very often.
Any races coming up by me (SpeedWorld) or at Firebird???
The last one I went to, you weren't there :p
