Subject: 360/408 Questions IP: Logged
Message: I just got my hands on a complete 360 out of a 2002 ram with only 2K miles on in. I want it to replace my worn out 318. My question is should i just beef up the stock 306 or should i go ahead and build a 408? How hard is it to tune a 408 with a MP 360 computer? My 318 isnt dead and im sure it will last another year.

Message: It's all in what you want to have and how much you wanna spend. The PCM will need some custom work. The heads will really need some massaging to feed the 408. You'll be pulling the engine all the way down for a 408 job, but to mod the 360, you are basically going no further than the cam. The crank/pistons/rods aren't touched. From a practicality point-of-view, it's a fresh engine. Any old $100 360 block can be bored for the 408. Why do that to a new block?

Message: Ya, what he said. If you want a 408, sell the almost new engine and get the money you need to build that 408.

Message: Keep the fresh engine since you already have it, Stroke it and smile a lot. The 408 should last you many, many good years on a fresh block, and a nice set of 2.020 heads either R/Ts or the Edelbrocks will flow good for the 408. I promise you will not be disapointed. How much compression you run is the question you should be asking, I say keep it about 9.5 to 10 to 1 for street use, and maybe a blower later.
Later,

That's just bizzare!!!

Message: A minor bookkeeping note. On a new 360 block, it works out to 406. It's a 408 when a used 360 gets a cleanup bore. Neither is radical for a street motor. Torquey as hell, but not radical.

wtf is this drivel?
radical to bore and stroke an engine?
since when?
as a history lesson ma mopar has had 413, 426(several versions) 440 ci engines in CARS and several lesser known more then 408 ci engines in trucks since the early '60's, so as far as the idea that a 408 is radical is to say the least, totally rediculous, especially when you consider the larger then 408's that GM and Ford also have made in the past.
Radical?
not on your life!

Message: well it all comes down to what you use the truck for.
a daily driver seeing more then 30 to 40 miles a day,
keep it a 360 add some bolt ons for power and enjoy it for the next 100,000 or so miles. but if its just your toy and you have 3 or 4 thousand or more to spend (surely you don't want that 408 breathing though stock heads, intake, throttlebody and so on)....want to spank a lightning

Message: Well... I have taken the oil pan off and I found a bit of white water/oil sludge all over the pan and crankshaft. I guess it was holding water for a while before I bought the engine. I found out yesterday I was givin the wrong info on the engine ... it has 20K miles on it .. not 2K. The crankshaft has a little bit of rust on it and so do some of the cylinder walls. Im thinking of a full rebuild now. If I keep it a 360 and just do a .030 overbore what would be the best pistons to use? I plan on adding a supercharger in the future. Also would I have to change the rods?

Message: It's your money, but the rust and evidence of condensation from sitting around certainly doesn't warrant rebuilding it. It sounds like you plan on sinking a lot more money in it than a nicely built 408 would cost.

Message: I have heard that building a 408 costs a lot more money than just building a strong 360. Am I wrong ? The 408 will require bigger heads bigger TB ... custom PCM and a bunch of other things? I was told that i need to get the rust out of the cylinders and doing a .030 over bore would fix any problems from the rust .... and aftermarket pistons will be handle the SC better than stock ...... i have been checking out the KRC page .... i migh copy his SC ready Race 360...

Message: Will it cost more? It all depends. With the 408 you may not feel the need to add a SC. Also figure on adding at least 4 grand for the SC plus "PCM and a bunch of other things." Don't forget the value of both your stock engine and the 360 which will offset the cost of the 408.
