Message: How much for gears and installation, did you have 3.55's before?
Post back what you find on how the gears affect your gas mileage city/hwy. I've heard that the going to 4.10's will lower gas mileage, which is logical, but have also heard that the 4.10's don't change the mileage or slightly increase mileage because the engine is in it's sweet spot.

Message: Yes, upgraded from 3.55s. I'll let you guys know the mpg change once I check it - I've heard differing results too. I'd guess its the guys with bigger tires who didn't see milage adversely affected, I expect I may use a bit more gas with my 31x10.5-15s, we'll see.
It isn't cheap, especially for a 4x4. Price will depend on what parts you select and what the person who is doing your installation is charging; best find out who is best in your area and ask for a price. For anyone around western MA, I used Wzorek Automotive - same guy Android used. All my mechanic friends say he's the best around, that's who they'd use themselves. I went with Yukon gears because I'd heard they were pretty good, but have learned that Richmond or Precision are the best - you get what you pay for. Carl Wzorek says the Eaton limited slip is even better than the Auburn, both are better than the stock mopar LSD; I had the open rear.

Message: Can the drivetrain handle a towing load that heavy? Coupled with the truck that's around a 13,000# GCW. That's scary to me.

Message: I believe it can - I'll be using a fifth wheel flatbed trailer, those handle pretty well. I believe the Dak is under rated, if you compare a Dak's towing capacity to that of a jeep you'll see what I mean. I've beefed up the suspension and found I can load the tractor I want to pull (fairly short local pulls) without squatting the truck too much. Most of the load will be on the trailer axles; which I have to upgrade to 5200 lb axles later this year to take the weight before I can do this. Shouldn't be any trouble stopping with electric trailer brakes. I've pulled twice that weight uphill on a chain (dead full size backhoe) with no damage.

Message: Even the, if you can believe this, V6 Gen1 could be had with a 5th wheel to tow 8,000 lb trailers. I actually saw one towing a nice 5th wheel camper way back when. I also remember wondering how soon his tranny would burn up. By then, I'd fried mine (overdrive) at least three times, and had never towed anything. Back then, there was no TransGo fix, and no aftermarket parts outside of better clutches. Do anything special to your Kowalski? Or is it a manual?

Message: Just because Kowalski has a 4.7 doesn't guarantee his auto tranny is the 45RFE. He has a 2000 truck and his profile doesn't declare what tranny he has. I remember when I was investigating, building, and pricing 2000 QCs you could get the 4.7 engine with either the 45RFE or the 46RE. In 2001 the 45RFE became the only auto tranny for this engine.

Message: modain you are flat out wrong, the 4.7 never came with the 46re, if it is an auto tranny it is the 45rfe or the newer and related 5-45rfe

Message: Thanks for being so authoritative, Pittdawg.
Now, I must declare I never discussed this configuration at a dealership, but when I was "building" a 2000 QC on the Dodge web site in 2000 this was my experience. After I selected the 4.7L engine I could choose either auto tranny in addition to leaving the NV3500 selected. This could have been an error with the web application, or it could have been how one could be ordered at that time. Don't know, don't care.
Thanks for pointing out how stoopid I am. I hate it when my real IQ pops up.

I have the 45RFE, sounds like maybe there was an error on DC's website at one point. Anyone with an auto that's not 45/545RFE behind their 4.7 out there ?
Good news on the gas milage - I've always got about 15 mpg both highway and around town (not a lot of stop and go where I am) without really trying. Just back from a little road trip where half the miles were freighted at about what the truck is rated for (just loaded, not towing) and it figured out to be 15.5 mpg.

Message: Kowalski,
What did the "4.10s and an Auburn limited slip" materials cost you? I might have a mech to do the job but parts prices are a concern right now. Just replaced a 4ton A/C in my Florida house...Can you say $3700 worth of champaine on my beer budget? I easily got a $5000+ job so I am not complaining in the least bit.
Now between Luc's topper that he is selling and my incredibly want for new gears, I need to decide where to send Uncle Sam's refund check.

Message: Hey, we can all be like that from time to time. I know I've stepped on my share of toes while dancing around this site; after a while we figure out who knows what's going on and better info ends up out there. There's plenty of "feel good" sites where the quality of the info plays second fiddle to someones feelings - that is why I think this is the best Dak site.
Izzy - you're looking at around a grand in parts for a 4x4, maybe a bit more for the highest quality stuff. It took them a while to set up my Yukons to where they were really happy with the set up. That can mean cleaning them up some, so saving on gears could cost more in set up than just getting the best gears to start with. Someone who doesn't do a lot of gear work might not be on top of that.
Milage update - smaller load, some higher speeds at 15.7 mpg. Seems to be a slight increase with the lower gears, a welcome surprise !

Message: I had 4:10s and also put in a Auburn LSD last August 2004. I have 33 BFG on 15x10 with a 3 inch body lift.
City driving I get 10-11, Freeway I get 12-13 or 14 down a mountain and with a tail wind...lol
I'm sure my speedo is a little off but I mostly only drive 65 on the freeway getting that 12-13pmg or barely 70 I get 12.5mpg. At 75 I get 12 mpg. The RPMs are pretty high now but great for towing. The BFG A/T 33s I have are really closer to 32s so if I probably had a true 33 tire this set up would be superb but I'm not complaining. It works well and not tickets for any more..lol.
None towing I'm at the following:
at 65 I'm 2100
at 70 I'm 2325
at 75 I'm 2500 or just a fraction under.
Before this set up I had 32/ProComp/A/T with 3:55 and I was getting 14-15 HWY and 11-13 City. I basically lost about 1mpg but I love the power so it was a good trade and the difference towing is awesome because I'm always in the power band.
I had 4wheel parts do it for me the 2nd time around for $1200 Yukon gears installed front+rear. 2 extra year warranty was $200, and the Auburn was 200-300 I can't remember but topped out right around $1600 for front and rear. 4wheel parts did a great job for me no problems thumbs up here in Austin, TX
