I sat down to ask another question about parts and thought that it would be better to get them all out of the way with one post. Shoulda done this to start...sorry for wasting the bandwidth.

I plan to do a few mods on my 00 4.7 4X4 CC that will *hopefully* increase both horsepower and mileage. Here is what I plan to do:

Throttle Body Spacer: Helix. I have heard some bad things about these spacers, but they seem to be the best bang for the buck, on paper...anyway... I don't think that I need to replace the throttle body - unless I can convince myself otherwise.

Cold Air Intake: KNN FIPK. A recent poster said that the 360 intakez is the sme thing.

High Flow Cat: JC Whitney has one... Bueler...Bueler...

Cat Back Exhaust: Gibson 3" single pipe. I would like a dual pipe system, but I don't want to dump the spare tire...my luck doesn't run like that...

Performance Chip: Jet Was thinking about the Jet, but the Performance Tuner sounds more versatile.

The thing is that I must keep this truck for at least 4 more years. My payments are up in December. I just rebuilt the tranny (sigh). I am too cheap to buy another new one, so I want to get the performance up on this one. Not to mention that I REALLY love my truck!

Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated. I enjoy reading everyones other posts.

Thanks in advance.

Chip

I'll chime in on the items I know about either from direct experience, or what the general consensus of the posters here indicate.

The 2000 engine has a 65mm throttle body (minus the narrowed path it's about 62mm). In 2001 DC put 68MM TBs (with the narrowing it's 65mm) on the 4.7 engines. This increase in airflow alone has been said to bring improvements. For greater inprovements you can have your TB reworked by The Fastman to be a true 68mm. Everyone's opinion on this mod and his work have been favorable. I'm saving my money for this one. Check it out for yourself - www.thefastman.com. Because of better power output people have claimed an MPG increase. (Of course, you gotta keep your foot out of the throttle with all that new power to see it.)

Stay away from the Jet Chip, per just about eveybody that has posted a comment regarding this mod they indicate it makes the automatic tranny shift better. And most people actually claim it robs power. Some have even dyno'd a power loss. Better yet, spend your money on a Superchips 3715 tuner. This will give a real HP/TQ increase. However, to get the big gains you must run 91 octane gas. I haven't run my tuner enough in 87 or 91 modes long enough to see if there is any difference in MPG.

Helix TB spacer - it does *nothing* beneficial for a 4.7 engine. It just lightens your checking account. Snake oil, perhaps?

Hope this is of some help.

Good tips there from modain.

I've done a few things to my '00 4.7 4x4 that helped the performance with the same mpg. Ported 68mm TB, HO cams, and the Mike Leach flash. Better power with no loss of milage.

One of the custom PCM flashes available for the '00 4.7. More ignition advance, cuts out AC under wide open throttle, eliminates speed limiter - pretty much what a good chip will do, maybe a bit more; but you have to send your PCM out to have it done. You can learn a lot more about some of the different flashes available by doing a search on this site.

Hey Folks,

Thank you for your suggestions! I took a look at the 360 intakez and bought one. The Power Shot model is on sale for $165 and I got the Silver ceramic coating to go with it. Total with shipping is $195.00. The thing that pushed me over the edge on this is that they use a KNN filter and my cleaning kit won't go to waste. I may have a while before I use it, but still makes me feel better.

I also bought the Fastman throttle body. When it came right down to it, it made sense to replace the whole thing for $180.00 than to get a spacer and still have more restriction than necessary.

Next stop is the cat and the cat back exhaust. I may have to wait on the tuner, but at least I am getting started. I also want to get all of my mods completed before I tune the PCM...so it can wait. (Unless another group-buy comes by)

Thanks for the info!

Chip

Kowalski;
Since you got the Leach flash what grade of gas do you run? Also how the MPG with the flash versus stock?

Thanks in advance,

FLDak - same milage, still runs fine on regular most of the time except I need to plan to run premium when towing.

Skinner - I no longer have contact info, but its been posted on this site if you do a search. What year is your truck ? Leach was originally only available for '00s; but I hear its now available for '01 too. Doesn't truly eliminate the speed limiter, but raises it to 256 mph - I don't think you'll be hitting it !

Chip - if you can handle the installation, you'll see more of a power gain from the HO cams for the $$ than some of the other mods you are doing.

Naw... Digging deeply into the engine is something that I don't think I can handle without laying up my truck for several days. It's my only vehicle and I wouldn't want to screw it up either.

I appreciate the tip though...

Hey chip, I wouldn't bother with the high flow cat or cat back exhaust. It will make your truck sound better, but it won't really do anything for performance. If you really want the look, then go for it. If you want a good sounding truck, just do a mufflers swap. No sense in replacing all the pipes, they are steel and should last a while. I would get a superchips as the next mod especially if you have an automatic. There is definetly a seat of the pants difference. Butt dyno's are usually not accurate, but you will notcie the difference. I have done the cat back route a couple of times and have not notice a performance increase. Louder does not = faster. Happy modding!
